I really don’t understand hating the Ricketts. Like, aren’t we supposed to want the monopoly guy to own our team AND also be a fan who wants the team to win AND is smart enough to hire smart baseball people to be the ones to decide how to spend his money?

Not sure what more you could want in an owner to be honest with you.

From what I’ve gathered from some people in this thread:

1) “All rich white men are evil”

2) Socialism

Seriously though, I’ll be pissed if they don’t sign Harper due to Ricketts tightening the purse. Then again, none of us will really know the reason.

Blame for not having money to sign Harper is like 90% Theo/Jed and 10% ownership, and most of that 10% is the unlikely possibility they pulled the rug out from the FO after picking up Hamels. Ownership could almost certainly spend more, but they’re also on pace to drop about 260 million in luxury tax payroll and penalties, which given the aggressive moves to stay under the tax by other major markets may give them the #1 payroll in MLB by opening day.

You all need to learn to separate your political views from every single aspect of life, especially the parts that are supposed to be fun. A lot of sucky stuff is going on, but I’ve become a lot happier by not letting it be on the forefront of my mind all day every day. Can’t change anything anyway.

No, you need to grow up.

Also, it's fun to have a team that buys talented players. It's not fun to have them choose profit over said talented players.

Have some soma and dig the brave (not so) new world. Go status quo!

Counterpoint: bring back guillotines and run the Cubs as a people’s collective

Don’t feel like turning this into another political thread, but I’m very engaged and pay attention. I just don’t let it affect my whole day every day and can compartmentalize.

And, yeah I want Harper. But I also realize there are other teams with deep pockets that want him too. If they don’t sign him we likely won’t even know the specific reason.

I just know this. From a baseball and franchise health perspective I’m very glad the Ricketts own this team.

How do you know they are choosing profit over talented players?

The politics here and on Twitter are a joke when it comes to paying millionaire athletes. People aren't happy unless millionaires are getting paid more than they're worth and everything is collusion when teams spend wisely. Pretty sure Alex Cobb is gonna survive on his $57 million contract. Are there cheap owners and teams out there? Absolutely. Are the Cubs one of them? Not even close.

I don't think people realize what the stricter penalties on the luxury tax have had on paying free agents. Overpaying for guys like Tyler Chatwood prove way more costly when you're losing draft picks in June and can't improve your future.

how much do you think the penalties are for exceeding the tax threshold

This always manages to apply for *INSERT BILLIONAIRE HERE*:

By definition any owner of the Cubs will be a billionaire, so nobody can defend the owners who have made the team as financially strong as they’ve ever been and as successful on the field as they’ve been in literally over a century? And, Harper still hasn’t signed elsewhere yet...

You feel the need to "defend" a billionaire for watching the value of his assets increase?

Correct, all sports team owners are scum. They are a necessary evil to tolerate, at best, in the hopes of seeing our sports squadrons fulfill our wildest sports fantasies. They deserve zero credit for anything except when they provided the needed money, and even then they deserve nothing from us because we have nothing compared to them. Their hideous egos and coffers are satisfied without us mewling and being grateful for them having more money than the rest of us.

Their "job" is to pay for what is needed. If they choose to maximize profits over this, then they have failed.

So, even if you buy into everything you just said, what more do you want from the owner than what the Ricketts have been? And, again, Harper still hasn’t signed elsewhere. And even if he does sign elsewhere that doesn’t automatically mean the Ricketts are maximizing profits over winning.

I’m not trying to say the Ricketts are some knights in shining armor. I’m just saying can we expect more out of an owner than what the Ricketts are?

You do realize that the Cubs being more financially strong makes the ability to buy players like Bryce Harper more likely to occur on a more consistent basis? The very first post I said they are owners who are also fans and want the team to win. Being financially strong allows them to shorten non-competitive gaps and lengthen competitive windows. If I’m wrong and that’s not what happens over the time they own the team I’ll be just as pissed as you.

You do realize that he financially supports Republican politicians?

You do realize that his daughter financially supports the Democrats? One of the top donors of right alongside Harvey Weinstein.

So I'd call it wash.

Telling someone to grow up? Sammys advice was dead on and your response proved it. You sound a little triggered.
