I've seen some scattered, weird takes from some Cubs fans (who are against signing Harper) that they're "just fine" w/ this "not enough money to sign Harper" scenario. What kind of idiot is actually "just fine" w/ their team not having enough money to sign a superstar?

All of Theo's prior comments have alluded to having funds available for this exact situation. If they don't have them now, I'm damn near certain that Theo got blindsided by Ricketts at the end of the season org meetings, where they discuss budget and all that stuff.

It would really suck if the Cubs aren’t serious suitors for Harper. He sure seems like the prime example of the type of free agent that Theo has regularly talked about. But I guess if the money’s not there, it’s not there.

 

On the other hand, I can already imagine the “Cubs just couldn’t pass up this opportunity” tweets/articles, if they do sign him.

I'm really curious how many of these sources are basing this new information almost solely on the Cubs trading Smyly. Listening to the Sharma/Finfer/Greenberg pod, it felt like that's what those guys were doing at least.

Heyward, Darvish and Chatwood (and, soon, Hamels) are history's greatest monsters.

 

Of course, not all monsters are created equal. So if they can't sign Harper, it's really Heyward and Darvish who are the real ones.

Another question I have about the no money theory, why not just backload the deal? The luxury tax affects draft penalties and taxes paid, but in terms of dollars in and dollars out you can still get creative with a contract. I can't see why they would keep Hamels when they very easily could set it up so they only pay Bryce $20m this year. The practical cost would likely be having to build next year's bullpen on a shoestring, but Bryce Harper is worth that.

I think mostly because that doesn't do much for the player. A guy like Harper is going to also get a bunch of opt outs, so he's going to want the biggest money up front, not the other way around.

He definitely was plugged in when he said Maddon would be fired if the Cubs lost the Wild Card Game.

 

There’s a lot of smoke out there from various media folks. Hopefully their sources are just extrapolating the Smyly/Hamels stuff and that isn’t a sign they can’t go after Harper. The Chicago sports media hasn’t been that great since Theo got here, the national guys have been better.

When was the last time Kaplan or some of these local guys reporting this really were tuned in and reported something/broke something of this magnitude? Our local guys seem to have sucked since Theo’s been here with breaking anything of significance.

Whoever wrote this stole my thoughts. It’s about surprising salaries at the upper levels and making huge profits at the expense of labor and fan base. I’ll wait and see what happens, but the message is awful.
