Kurkijan says Harper “won’t get close to $400 million”

He’s definitely getting “close to $400 million” unless some team goes crazy on AAV for like 6 years (like 6/300). I’ll gues he ends up at 13/425.

Why haven't the Cubs signed him yet? It's taking forever.

Negotiations over number 34 with Lester.

Lester did wear 31 with the Red Sox but Ortiz was 34. Bryce seems to have worn 34 back to his HS days. I hope he has to buy Lester an ATV, pick up truck or fishing boat or something.

Well Lester isn't going to switch to 31.

Kurkjian's full quote

Five years ago, we assumed that, by the fall of 2018, Harper would be a generational player with an unprecedented track record that included multiple MVPs, a World Series ring and a guarantee of 500 home runs, all of which would mean a $400 million to $500 million contract. That day has not yet arrived. Harper, who soon will turn 26, is a tremendous talent with an impressive résumé and will get paid a tremendous amount of money by the Phillies, Dodgers, Cubs or some other team, but it's probably not going to be close to $400 million. In this era of interchangeable pieces and movable parts, the matchups and the analytics, some teams might prefer two players at $15 million a year, or even three players at $10 million a year, rather than paying any one player $30 million per season.

Well, those teams are either idiots or too poor to afford it so they’ve talked themselves in to that line of thinking when it comes to a player like Harper.

Depends on the team and their needs. If a team has horrible production out of a corner OF and is one player away from contending, then paying (or overpaying) for Harper makes sense. If you've got a few holes to fill, getting 2-3 players makes more sense.

Bryce started wearing 34 because he was a Mickey Mantle fan and couldn't have 7 once upon a time. sorry victor

Bryce has a Bulls hat on in his latest Instagram post. Probably means the deal is done, imo. Also early voting today to fly to Chicago for the weekend/next week in all likelihood.

I will leave this depressing article here.

But Friday’s salary-dump trade – moving Drew Smyly to the Texas Rangers in order to pick up the $20 million option on Cole Hamels – reinforced what multiple sources have told The Athletic: The Cubs have financial concerns that may limit their ability and motivation to make a huge splash this winter.

Time for another rebuild.

Maybe I'm sticking my head in the sand, but I don't buy it. Picking up a 20 million dollar option on the 5th starter position after preaching fixing offense in the season wrap up press conference is not the move of team that has a money problem.
