8 pitchers had at least 100 IP and an ERA below 2.80. 2 of them pitch for the Cubs, and those two have a 1.56 ERA in their 4 starts. The Cubs have faced 4 of the other 6 in their 7 playoff games. In those other 3 games the Cubs have 19 runs, 6+ per game.

Too soon. Now if we go down 3-1 then...

If we go down 3-1 I'll start posting LeBron James vs Golden State Warriors memes until everyone gets tired of them and I pass out.

Go horsefeathers yourselves you Debbie Downers.

This is likely a loss. Urias is similar to Hill. The only difference is that he's younger, but he'll probably go 6 innings. Unless Lackey can hold them to 1 run or less by that point, I don't see the Cubs winning tomorrow.

This series will end in 5 most likely barring a Kershaw collapse.

G'day.

I'm halfway through anger-eating a bag of M&Ms and hating myself for letting a game impact me this much, and I still can't even fathom the things people do to try and find their way to pessimism.

Julio Urias isn't similar to Rich Hill. Hill throws 2 pitches, Urias fairly evenly mixes in 4. Hill had a 2.12 ERA, Urias's is higher than John Lackey's. Urias has already had an outing where the Cubs bombed him into oblivion. He hasn't thrown more than 3.2 innings in 46 days. The Dodgers preferred to send both Kershaw and Hill on 3 days rest than let him start in the NLDS. He is undeniably talented and has had a strong outing against the Cubs, but spare me the 'likely loss' stuff.

He'll be mixing in his filthy slider and curve ball. He has the blueprint on how to shut down the Cubs bats. I'm not directly comparing statistics, but they're both lefties and they both have a nasty curve ball. That's all that needs to be said against this Cubs lineup. That's all true that he hasn't thrown many innings, but I don't think it'll matter too much if the bats help him out by striking out like they have been all series long. The guy the Cubs bombed was pitching one of his first few starts. That's no longer the case anymore. NLDS is different from the NLCS because the Nats aren't nearly as flawed and didn't have a blueprint. It was also a winner take all game 5 on the road so you can understand why they'd want Kershaw or Hill over him. It is likely a loss barring them hitting some pitches that they haven't hit well all season long. Sorry that that disappoints you, but that's just the truth.

If you haven't already prepared yourself for the cubs season coming to a close, you should do so. It'll take a miracle to save this season given the circumstances the Cubs face in the next two games.

Well at least if we lose this series we won't have been up 3-1 and 5 outs away nor will we be swept. Then again if we lose tomorrow at least we know 1-3 comebacks are possible. horsefeathers.

True as it may be, it's the playoffs. So horsefeathers logic.

Such a tedious thought process. The Urias that the Cubs crushed wasn't real because he hadn't started a bunch of games, but the recent Urias who hasn't seen the 5th inning since football season started doesn't count because the Cubs(the best team in baseball against LHP who already torched him once) are bad.

The Cubs could very easily lose 2 in a row and their season could be over. That doesn't make the bizarro freakouts about the Cubs being pathologically incapable of hitting breaking balls to be true.

Sure that's the blueprint that seems to be working lately but that blueprint has been executed by absolutely elite pitchers and pitches, Urias may be that one day and maybe he even has it in him tomorrow, but it's not just a blanket statement of throwing those pitches against us leads to automatic success success. They still need to be executed at an elite level like other elite pitchers have done against us. We've bombed Urias already once this year with his version of those "filthy" pitches on top of him not pitching a ton lately and not having great success.

Baseball is awesome. And the Cubs are awesome. Win this and we're alright.

Yeah yeah this this this. I got to see the best inning of baseball I've ever seen like a week ago because I didn't horsefeathers myself, turn out the lights and go to sleep. We've all seen this team no hit through 4 only to come back with a 45 pitch 3 run inning en route to a curb stomping.

Who knows if game 4 is that 5th inning grind on the Dodgers but it seems like good time for it. I'm chilling, loving October baseball and can't shake this picture of a Rizzo giving a post-series interview with Addy in a headlock

I have supreme confidence in this team to get the job done tonight. Lackey goes 7 tonight, gives up 1 run, the offense wakes up and scores 10 runs. I cannot believe this team would get to this point and just fold like an accordion. They're better than this. They will swing back at the Dodgers tonight.

Adversity happens. Most teams who win championships have moments where it seems like it won't happen. This team has come back from late deficits all season when it looked like the game was over and they've done it while they were slumping offensively. They are down 2-1, that's faaaaaaar from insurmountable. They just have to win 3 out of 4 games. I sure there have been plenty of 4 game stretches where this has happened.

Slumps happen in this game. And when they do happen it's hard to have much confidence but they can end at any time. And who knows, maybe a hit by pitch, a bloop and then someone gets a hold of a hanger in the first or second inning and just like that we got our swagger back. I've always figured that even when the World Series happens there's going to be that time when it seems like we aren't gonna do it, and I sit back in fear and sadness and worry about it but in the run to the World Series, obviously we get through that. It's possible this is one of those moments.

Not to get too meatbally or narrative-driven, but, John, you talk all this big talk about jewelry and being ready to go in the post-season, and you are facing a little kid tonight. I know you aren't really going head-to-head. But, it's time to back that talk up and show him how it's done.

We get this to 2-2 and the Dodgers are facing the prospect of facing Lester in Game 5. And they know they can't hit him. And a loss in that game would mean they head to Chicago having to win both games. We start dictating the terms of this series with one win tonight. They'd be all but forced to go to Kershaw in Game 5. And that's what I want. Get him on short rest and make him beat our best at full strength.
