Per Various Sources: Strop has a torn meniscus in his left knee (Out 4-6 Weeks)

Ugh.

They were saying on the score this morning that even though Edwards is going to see higher leverage spots, he isn't going to necessarily see an innings uptick (i.e. back to back days or 4 appearances in 5 days) because they still want to be careful with him since he had some injury problems in the minors.

That makes sense. I just don't want Joe Smith having any part of "late innings".

Agree, but when Strop and Rondon aren't options now and Edwards is being taken along slowly it's pretty much going to be down to seeing Smith, Grimm, Wood, or Montgomery in the 7th/8th innings a few times in the next few weeks.

Manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday night that Joe Smith, who was acquired from the Angels an hour before the Aug. 1 trade deadline, would assume more late-inning duties despite the ascent of 24-year-old rookie reliever Carl Edwards Jr.

Ugh.

How is this a bad thing? We have a 12 game lead and a relief pitcher who's had injuries in the past. We have a manager is concerned with not burning guys' arms out.

It has nothing to do with the Carl Edwards part of the quote. I'm just not a fan of Joe Smith. Ultimately, it doesn't matter right now, but I will be disappointed if Smith makes the playoff roster at the expense of a guy like Grimm.

I'll take the 4-6 weeks considering the potential alternatives. Hopefully he can get back before the end of the regular season and get in a couple appearances in low pressure situations when we have the division locked up.

Sucks that it's his left knee though. Thankfully it's not worse.

I'm not sure that one is any better than the other? His right knee would be the leg he pushes off with.

I'm glad it's his drive leg. The front leg is more critical to control and velocity than the back leg. Either way surgery sucks.

It's not his drive leg..... It is his landing leg

Think of the playoff roster this way. With a shorter rotation and extra days off, there's no need for a long man that's currently in the bullpen. Chapman, Rondon, Edwards, Strop, and I guess Wood stand to get the overwhelming majority of high leverage innings. That means that the last spot or two are best offered to a true specialist, someone with a narrow role that you can be pretty confident that he can fulfill that role.

I say that as an extended prologue to the possibility that Smith is a better fit than Grimm. Grimm has been very good recently, but his career is rife with inconsistency in throwing strikes, and while he has a bit of a platoon split this year he historically is pretty similar against both RH and LH. He's not going to be a burden on a playoff pen, but it's not unfair to say he's a guy who is more useful in a 162 game season than a 5-7 game series. Smith might be the opposite, even with his struggles this year he's been almost as good against RH hitters as Grimm, and he has far more historical success against them. I say 'might' because relievers of Smith's age and stuff are flirting with the line between useful and bad, but he does have the delivery/deception aspect that should age better than your average RHRP too.

Well that's less than ideal. Also, reading comprehension is tough, read "left leg" probably 10 times still went with right in my brain. Such a moran.

Yep. There are no such things as high leverage innings when you are 15 games up in September. Just get Strop healthy and ready to go for the playoffs.

You would prefer he pitched the 5th inning ?

Best news we could probably get that starts with "knee surgery in mid August"

Grimm will get a chance to show if he's indeed figured anything out and Joe doesn't have to give him a lot of rope.

Almost certainly Edwards will stumble again, maybe a couple times - but that's all fine - we can afford it now.

6 weeks from now it's a different story.
