They said Schwarber was not going to play that much, next thing you know he has 16 HRs and 5 more in the postseason. Maddon just said Almora was not going to be playing everyday and he seems to find his way in pretty much every game. If Contreras proves himself early Maddon will find spots to get him ABs

I'm expecting extra days off will rejuvenate Miggy a bit. If that isn't the case and Contreras hits, then yeah totally different story.

But I also wouldn't compare this to Schwarber's situation in that I don't expect Contreras to move around the diamond. They'll likely want to keep his focus on improving his catching skills.

I'd imagine another reason for the call up is to give Ross more rest. He's on pace to start/play in over 100 games this year, something he has only done once in his career and that was 2007. He's been in the 50-60 game range for most of the time between 2007 and now.

My guess would be Ross catches Lester and Miggy and Contreras split the rest 50/50. Maybe Willson catches Hendricks and Hammel and Montero catches Jake and Lackey.

I don't ever want Rizzo to get hurt BUT.... now I kinda want to see Vogelbach get a shot.

He could be on an AL in the next ~30 days for all your viewing pleasure

Would much rather have Montero catching Hendricks. I imagine superior pitch framing benefits him more than any other pitcher on the roster.

I really think we'll see Contreras get 1 of every 5 games to start. He'll get innings in other games and likely hit in all of them. But I figure he's here to learn framing, game calling, and get to know the pitchers. I think this is a "reward" type situation where his bat was SO GOOD, we'll bring him up for a bit. Then send him back down to implement daily what he learns while he's up. So he can be ready for September/October. The FO obviously values game calling and framing a ton and if he gets MORE time than what I've laid out, then it means he's likely further along than we've read about when it comes to those things, which is great. But, if its not the case, I don't see us disrupting the staffs routines or anything in any way whatsoever, when they've been THIS great.

I love Contreras as a prospect, but I'll be surprised if he gets more than a game out of five for now. I think this is their way of showing him what he's got to work on, if he's got a chance to catch for us in the postseason this year. Worst case is he's our everyday guy next year. This is a win-win.

I'd guess they'll have Contreras catch one starter consistently, and as long as he doesn't humiliate himself he'll get starts against LHP on non-Lester/Ross days. So something like 50/30/20 between Montero/Contreras/Ross

If rizzo gets hurt, you're getting banned and then Kyle and derwood are getting your home address.

anybody can catch 87 on the corners though...i feel like Jake & especially Lester need it more with more movement on their pitches

Well, Lester is with Ross, so I don't see WC catching him this season. Regarding Hendricks vs the other guys, my take is that Hendricks is gonna need the catcher who can best make his borderline pitches look like strikes. And that would likely be Montero over WC. But I don't claim to be an expert on pitch framing, so maybe framing a soft tosser like Hendricks is easy?

If the idea is to minimize poor framing, you probably want a guy who gets the most swinging strikes as it is, or maybe the guy who allows the least amount of total contact. Or maybe the guy who gets the most swings out of the zone, or maybe the guy who throws the most pitches in the zone. Thankfully among Cubs starters one guy is all of those things at once.

John Lackey.

That would be fantastic as I'll be at Monday's Lackey start.

I was originally thinking he'll get Hammel as that is who Schwarber was supposed to catch but that could mean nothing. Lackey would make sense. And then if he handles the adjustment well they can add some more starts from the other starters (except Lester). I think what TT guessed sounds like the most likely answer.

Oh calm down you pansies, I clearly said I don't want him to get hurt. But even if he did this organization is so awesome that I have no doubt Vogelbach would come up and do just fine in his short absence and build some serious trade value in the process.

yeah this is my thought; he needs framing as much as anybody, but he should be a really easy pitcher to do that with

it's not about wanting rizzo to get hurt or not. i just have no idea why you want to see vogelbach get a shot. let him keep putting up numbers in the PCL and hope someone thinks he's good.

Because I've been following his career for 5 years, thats all. I'm a pretty positive person. Of course I want Rizzo to never get hurt and be awesome forever but I also think its possible that on a team this good he could miss a couple weeks at some point this season and we still win the World Series at an epic level.

That isn't just possible...it's absolutely true, but I still think you're crazy for wanting to see Vogelbach get a shot.
