i remember feeling like i was on a one man crusade in his defense in the 2014-15 offseason but i'm sure i wasn't the only one on his side

I know I've been pro-Javy on everything. I don't remember any long debates on his defense. I DO remember you replaced him in your signature last year with Happ, and cited Javy defenders as having turned you against him.

not a debate ON his defense...i was speaking IN his defense.

after 2014 the vast majority of people here basically thought he was trash and a bust (the thread "javysucksbndpublicaccess" or whatever the hell it was called was very popular). my position was he was way too talented to give up on bc of 2 months of swinging and missing at everythign and what you're referring to is me joking that people had turned so far in the opposite direction that it was making me look anti-javy.

the strongest position against him i had was that i thought he needed to be platooned (and was expendable given his likely to be inflated trade value). i'll be ecstatic if he proves me wrong in that regard bc i always thought he had that upside.

Damn... Rust could have learned the same lesson by just watching Cubs games.

My feelings for never really liking him were mostly based in seeing the potential if he just stopped being so stupid at the plate with the hacking. Like the dude has crazy raw talent and it was so frustrating to see he just needed stop being such an idiot flailing away at the plate on pitches that weren't even close. I hope he's turning, or turned, the corner on that. All this time maybe Javy just needed some Chili.

Like looking back at former Cubs prospects of lore a guy like Junior Lake you could just see like yeah this guy hacks but maybe he'll be okay but can't hope for much more but watching Javy you knew something is and was there if he just "seemed" to tone things down.

That's along the lines of how I've looked at him. My over-generalized look at his potential is that he could he be Soriano back at 2B, except with awesome defense, and this stretch, if anything, REALLY makes me thinks of those periods where Soriano would just be beating the whole horsefeathering world for a week or two and you'd think, "how the hell can this guy be THIS awesome," and then he end up flailing at the dumbest pitches eventually and just keep repeating the cycle. And, hell, I'm not gonna complain about having Soriano with baller defense at 2B.

I was definitely with you on this.

I wanted him gone plenty of times during his long, long stretches of being absolute ass, and yet I also thoroughly enjoy when he does awesome things, so I don't give a horsefeathers who was right or not about him.

Sounds like what someone that was wrong about him would say!

“After (Nolan Arenado) struck out, I turned to the outfield and said, ‘See the difference when they don’t know the signs,’ and then (LeMahieu) said something,” Baez said. “He told me, ‘Then change the signs.’”

Baez replied to LeMahieu: “Why are you telling me? Tell me to my face. Are you giving the signs?”

“I’m really mad about it, but I’m really smart,” Baez said. “We won the game and the series.”

I just love this.

EDIT: Also, the Rockies announcers in that clip are dumb as hell. They're basically saying..."stealing signs is fine!" Ok, well if it is, so is trying to prevent it, dumbasses.

They have no idea what they are talking about at almost all times. If you have a chance, watch that rundown that Baez was in on Friday and listen to Len and JD describe it, and then have a listen to the Rockies' team...the throw that is made to third when Javy is between third and home makes NO sense and allowed Rizzo to get to 2nd, but they act like the defense worked flawlessly. It blew my mind.

We better not throw at anyone next week against them and they better not throw at us. Just beat those idiots and move on with it until we play next year. With them well when they leave town and ask them to remember to watch us in the playoffs when they are sitting at home.

My favorite part of that is the parenthetical name references the author had to add to Javy’s quote. Javy probably referred to Arenado as “What’s-his-face” and LeMahieu as “that scraggly ass white dude on second.”

i know that javy is just having his hot streak at the beginning of the season and will cool off eventually and enter a brutal cold streak. But im enjoying 2016 NLCS Baez while he's here. Any growth at all and he could be a 4-win player. that's huge.

Yeah it’s definitely a well timed hot streak and he’s likely to come down to earth a bit, BUT there’s some things he’s doing and how he’s approaching things to think the lows may not be as low or as prolonged as they have been in the past.

It wouldn’t overly surprise me to see him end up the year doing something like Ozuna or Schoop has done the last few years offensively with the elite defense at 2B. Like you said that’s a 4-5 WAR player.

I remember always arguing Kyle over him.

Also, I forgot my password and I think i just logged in for the first time in a year. Whoops. I was still reading from afar.

I will never stop alternating between thinking he's about to bust and thinking he's about to become A-Rod.

For years, I had an almost paternal affection for Starlin. I would get really excited when he succeeded, and really defensive when people (often reasonably) criticized him. When he was traded, that affection transferred to Javy. Having followed his ups and downs since draft day, he’s definitely my favorite Cub. Others may be more consistent, but I find his successes far more satisfying. Here’s hoping he keeps this rolling.
