Couldn't watch the game but I got to sneak a peak at the game with no audio on my phone and saw the Cubs were winning 13-0...but Jake is still pitching in the 7th...and he seems very focused...and he is Jake...I'd better check if he's carrying a no-no. Why am I not surprised at all? Just silly.

I think Kerry Wood's 20K game was the best pitched game in the history of baseball (I know I'm biased, but even taking that bias into account, I still think that's the case).

I didn't get to watch that game live, as it was the days before the internet made such things possible. I have seen replays of the game, though, and it was amazing.

That said... tonight's game, was the greatest Cubs game I have ever seen. It's hard to say that 20K is better than no-hitter or the other way around, because they utilize different methods of pitching.

The offense in this game, however, puts this one on a whole different level. I am so excited about this season, and I was already convinced this was the year. The only question now is how does this team surprise us every single day, and I can't wait to see it.

I think it was, and by game score it was. When you look at the run scoring environment then (and the team he was facing), it becomes even more impressive. If it weren't for Kevin Orie, it would be talked about even more. As for 'pitching styles", the most rare and effective is to miss lots of bats, taking all other variables out of the equation. On that day, Wood essentially turned a formidable lineup into spectators of his greatness.

But as for tonight, Jake wasn't really even on his game and still got the no-no. Pretty impressive.

Amazing game. Can I get a time machine so I can fully appreciate the day Theo & Jed signed Scott Feldman?

Not only does he throw a no-hitter, he gets on-base 3 times (2 singles and a walk) and scores a run. He outscored and out hit the Reds by himself, and I thought baseball was a team game. Arrieta's line on the year now stands at 273/.333/.545.

And speaking of good hitting pitchers, Cubs pitchers (including 0-for-2 from their relievers) have a better slash line (.243/.300/.378) than the White Sox (.218/.275/.341) who have exactly 0 PAs from their pitchers.

In fact, Cubs pitchers have out hit 8 MLB teams thus far going by OPS.

Cubs pitchers - .243/.300/.378/.678

San Diego Padres - .234/.299/.348/.648

Oakland A's - .230/.283/.368/.650

Seattle Mariners - .222/.295/.379/.675

Tampa Bay Rays - .221/.289/.374/.663

LA Angels - .220/.294/.306/.600

Atlanta Braves - .218/.302/.285/.587

Philadelphia Phillies - .214/.271/.347/.618

Chicago White Sox - .218/.275/.341/.616

They have a better batting average than 17 teams and a better OBP than 8. Someone give John Mallee a pat on the backside.

It's official. Greatness has become routine. Since June 21st of last season, Jake is 20-1 with a 0.86 ERA, 5 complete games, 4 shut outs and 2 no-hitters in 24 starts. Kind of amazing, right? Now consider that his 1 loss came when the Cubs were no-hit by Cole Hamels...

Another fun fact, coming into that run Arrieta was 6-5 with a 3.40 ERA.

Switch. Flipped.

Jake is gonna get a HUGE HUGE contract. And it better be from the Cubs.

As painful as it will be, you have to let him go, assuming it's going to take a mega deal. It's too bad he's not a couple of years younger.

That is unless the Rickettses decide to go full Dodgers with the payroll.

But seriously Reds get a weak ass single up the middle so Arrieta isn't throwing some 130 pitch no hitter

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA no

reverse jinx yo

Yeah, as amazing as he is, I still don't want them giving him the deal he's going to net unless, like you said, the Ricketts just say "horsefeathers it" and decide the money vault is finally completely open.

i don't have the quote, but Arrieta has said he'd be willing to give the Cubs a pretty good discount. Hopefully that's still the case.

Yep. Especially if they win the World Series this year or next. No need to sign a 32 year old pitcher to a 8 year, $250 million contract. Give Bryce Harper that money instead.

A triumphant Cubs swooping in and signing Harper when every meatball under the sun just assumes he's going to the Yankees would just be the most gloriously soul/dream-crushing thing ever for everyone else.

Basically this needs to be the Cubs' business plan going forward:

Arrieta killed an entire Twitter account yesterday:

Yeah, the Cubs have one too...it died last year, but after a bit of down time, came back and is going again.

Damn golf league. Scheduling me to play on an Arrieta start night. Tssk tsk. It ended up being a pretty long night watching both the Blackhawks and Cubs game. Blackhawks live and Cubs on archive. But it was worth every minute. Definitely one of my all time favorite games. Crazy how empty that stadium was last night.

If Arrieta would take a 5 year deal or less, I would have to seriously consider it, no matter what the per-year would be. I don't think he'd consider it though because some dumb team will offer a 32 year old pitcher an 8+ long deal and I am not doing that ever.

Oh man, I didn't even think about the poor dumb bastards who watched the Blackhawks game instead of this.

I missed only the first period because of the No No thanks to an 8:42pm start. I will take playoff hockey any day over April baseball except for last night.
