His ceiling to me is still a 40 HR .900 OPS guy with average defense which should be like 6-7 WAR.

And we are presently on pace to be considered one of the greatest teams of all time without his services. The Cubs success without Schwarber proves that they don't need him to win. Does it help? Sure, but if you trade him I suspect it would be for a guy (or guys) who will be WAR monsters in the future (or presently). He's a valuable asset. Could he play acceptable defense and put up great offense? Absolutely, but he could hold more value to an AL team.

I also don't think his offense+defense will ever be good enough to warrant a 7 win season. A 6 win season maybe. 5 win season sure, but I don't think he's the sleeping giant people are making him out to be. He's a damn fine ball player and I'm perfectly happy with him on the team, but he is not a player we presently need, and if he can be used to shore up a weakness in the team elsewhere with other tremendous talents, so be it

That said I'm not so sure he gets traded anyways, so it kinda doesn't matter.

Yeah, could Schwarber have a 6 win season? Possibly, especially if he can catch a few dozen games. More likely he's going to be in that Nelson Cruz category of big bats whose lack of speed/positional value limit his ceiling. No need to give him away by any stretch, that's plenty valuable and worth having around, but when it comes to trade value he's not on the Bryant/Russell/Rizzo tier.

So KC is apparently ready to move on from Yordano Ventura. I wouldn't mind acquiring him and throwing him in the pen for the rest of this year and letting him take Hammel's spot next year.

Hard pass on Ventura. Velocity keeps dropping each year and, more importantly, he's a pile of [expletive].

Yeah, no need to add shitbags to our group, especially ones that look to be regressing.

A young hard throwing but erratic sky's the limit talent with the temper to match? What could possibly go wrong? We can call him Big V.

That name is saved for John Lackey's ex-wife.

If anyone is searching for a deformed looking pitcher with a punchable face, an annoying wife and no discernible pitching talent in his right arm, the White Sox just DFA'd Latos.

The White Sox are such a gaping hole of MLB level talent that they're furiously DFA'ing signing and trading for a revolving door of bums

This is so entertaining

They've turned into the 2005-2006 era Cubs

"Juan Pierre, now that's a name. Trade whatever you can to bring him here!"

"Glendon had a good season or two even though he was horrible last year. I think we can rehabilitate him"

"Burnitz is a great replacement for Sosa, they both hit home runs"

"Phil Nevin? He's still playing? Seriously? .......horsefeathers it just get him"

Oh man that 2006 team was the absolute nadir of my fandom to be honest. I think it was the excitement of the 2003-2004 teams, the reality of the 2005 team, and ultimate collapse of a garbage team led by one of the least likable managers of all time.

I never felt less confident about the people running the Cubs and the lack of any sort of cohesive plan other than "let's just move some parts around and hope it works"

Phil Nevin will forever be perched high atop list of 'that's right, we did have him for a minute' Former Cubs.

was burnitz the one we signed because of something like his average vs rhp with RISP? or was it jacque maybe?

I think both were signed for similarly dumb ideas like that

Reeks of a desperate team that still thinks they can "go for it." With the problems they have with their starting pitching, bullpen, low OBP hitters, and mediocre farm system, their best bet is to tear down and completely rebuild. But they won't do it, which is hilarious.

Reinsdorf is 80. As such, he doesn't really have the patience for a multi-year rebuild.

So uhh.. any chance Chris Sale is on the block at the deadline?

They're too dumb to realize they should be rebuilding and also probably wouldn't deal with us for stupid reasons.
