I just got rock hard over the thought of our players' dongs. If that's wrong, I don't care.

Interesting decision to have Soler DH instead of Schwarber.

Maybe a psychological thing. Let him focus on crushing baseballs.

Might just be a "Schwarber is a better outfielder" thing

I don't know. Their range is probably about the same with Soler possessing a better arm.

Maybe its a "Schwarber will have to play the outfield many times this season because he's better than Soler at hitting and we're a national league team so he might as well get started now" thing

It's a small thing to be annoyed about, but I really wish that Bryant were higher than 5th. The guy was 8th in the NL in wOBA, we shouldn't be keeping him from extra late inning at bats. Fowler, Heyward, Bryant, Rizzo, Zobrist, Schwarber, Soler, Montero, Russell would be nearly perfect, maybe swapping Schwarber for Zobrist because Rizzo hits LHP and Zobrist breaks up a trio of high-K guys.

I'm hoping it is just giving a nod to the veteran to start the year and then move Bryant up when he's mashing kind of move.

Was just outside, if this game was here Soler would have on at least 3 ninja masks or he would just refuse to leave the clubhouse.

He's not wearing those this season.

Only injury of the year: Soler, Frostbitten face.

Feel free to call this dead wrong, but perhaps Joe wants more contact guys earlier in the lineup to drive in runs since we struggled so much with RISP and less than 2 outs last year.

I think it's a tom tango thing, just like chris coghlan batting 3rd so much late last year.

The Third Spot

The old-school book says to put your best high-average hitter here. The lead-off hitter should already be in scoring position and a hit drives him in. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am.

The Book says the #3 hitter comes to the plate with, on average, fewer runners on base than the #4 or #5 hitters. So why focus on putting a guy who can knock in runs in the #3 spot, when the two spots after him can benefit from it more? Surprisingly, because he comes to bat so often with two outs and no runners on base, the #3 hitter isn't nearly as important as we think. This is a spot to fill after more important spots are taken care of.

Bryant's great vs. fireballers, too (nearly twice the league average for OPS vs. type)

I thought the latest sabr-smarts were that 3rd is a place for about your sixth-best hitter because it has that weird property of coming up with 2 outs/none on a lot.

Edit: I see someone else already mentioned it. I really, really like Joe Maddon.
