Only 2 split squad days, is that unusual? I would have guessed that there were like 5 to 10 of those in most years.

Struck me as odd too.

Does anyone know if they work out at their own facility on the mornings of days with road games?

I believe those get added on as the spring moves along and they see when/where they can fit them in and who needs to get guys extra work.

this was in a release from last year, and the schedule looks like they had four total split squads, and those vegas game created 2 days of split squad.

The Cubs have also added four games to the schedule since its original release. The club will play a pair of games in Las Vegas against the Oakland Athletics on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14. The club will conclude Spring Training with two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4.

I think I mentioned Fife's mom works in my office. He told her this is the best training/medical staff he's ever worked with (he was in BOS and LAD, not sure if anywhere else) and he's feeling as good as ever.

Not that I'm super excited for Fife, but cool to hear great things about the org anyway and really anything that suggests baseball will be here soon is fun.

I'm actually happy to see Leathersich there. I didn't know we were able to retain his services.

Yeah, we signed him to a minor-league deal after we non-tendered him. Is he actually physically able to pitch, though? I thought it was more of just a stash-and-wait kinda thing with him this year?

He's at best late summer, I think. I just missed the minor league deal. I hope he can be a valuable piecedown the stretch or next year.

Q: Every year you get asked about being excited for spring training but this could be a special season so I'll ask again, because you're out there pretty early: Are you ready to start now?

JH: Yeah, there's a fair number of players here already. And a bunch showing up early next week. They're excited, we're excited. One of the main reasons we wanted to make this complex as great as it is, is to make it a destination so guys are excited to get here and work out here. Everyone is getting ready.

Q: You guys have intimated backing off some of your pitchers; obviously, Jake Arrieta would be at the top of your list. How does that play out this spring?

JH: We still have to talk about that. And really when we say back off we mean just start guys out a little slower and think about their progression into the year as it relates to a seven-month season. I think that's a change for a lot of teams when they get into that competitive part of their timeline, they hope to be playing that extra month. We keep that in mind as we start the spring and talking through it now when everything is calm. It's important to have those conversations on the front end.

Q: In that regard, what's your stance on six-man rotations even if it's just one time through, not necessarily for weeks or months?

JH: I think it can make sense. I think it's important not to rule things out. If you run into a period of the season where you're playing 21 days in a row or something like that it can be worth it. Sometimes after a rain out it makes sense if there is a doubleheader that backs you up, so we're not opposed to it.

It would be nice if Hoyer didn't have the same initials as Hendry. It distracted my reading enjoyment.

I thought it was Heyward for a second.

lol wtf

hendry is so long gone from my awareness/consciousness about this team. i barely remember that he exists. it was so weird to see him pop up at our NLDS game. felt like i'd seen a ghost.
