Yeah, that’s a surprise. Man, Harris was so bad, though. No surprise there. The Score is such a shell of what it used to be. So much time filled with nationally syndicated shows, wagertainment, and replays of 2016 Cubs games. And the personalities on ESPN 1000 do nothing for me.

The Chicago Sports Fan Message Board predicted this a few months ago with Mully, but I think it was their assumption that he was going to retire and not get forced out.

Bernstein didn’t have a goodbye show for obvious reasons, but I felt Mully should have.

There’s talk of Jarrett Payton or Parkins taking the spot.

It's so freaking weird listening to sports radio in most other cities, because it's all wagertainment. Nothing but "GAMBLEGAMBLEWAGERGAMBLE!!!" is just infuriating when I'd rather hear people dissect a QB's mechanics or how tough an upcoming college schedule is or what have you. It also tends to attract a bunch of washed out Pat McAfee wannabes, which, just, ugh.

I wasn't a fan of Harris, but losing Mully just sucks, and I really don't like the idea of The Score continuing to lurch down that road.

It’s so unrecognizable compared to what it was in its heyday. It’s always had its flaws and bad on air personalities, but we’re only like 7 or 8 years removed from it being around the clock live and local. None of the current on air personalities really carry any gravitas or have any charisma. I’ve always liked Grote, Harris and Spiegel are fine. They all kinda seem like supporting players though, Holmes comes off as whiny and condescending and Haugh is very grating.

 

Local radio is dying everywhere, but the talent drain is tough to see.

Folks on Reddit claim Parkins makes 7 figures in his current gig. I really enjoyed Danny, but unless he gets let go by FS1 or just misses Chicago so terribly that he’s willing to settle for, what, a quarter of that, there’s no way he’s taking the gig. And he and haugh would go together like oil and water.

 

More likely it’ll be someone they can save a few bucks on like Ruthie Polinski, Gabe Ramirez, or Carmen Vitale.

Only thing here I disagree with is Holmes.  I've been a big fan of his for a long time.

Many people think it’s Ruthie Polinski. She’s ok, but I prefer Gabe Ramirez.

According to the Sun-Times, it's going to be Payton replacing Mully, which explains his WGN departure a few weeks ago.  But is the morning radio gig really a step up from lead sports anchor on WGN?

That's not just other cities.  Even in Chicago, they are increasingly going to syndicated broadcasts including the gambling-sponsored ones.  After an evening Cubs game, you get about 20-30 minutes of recap and then it cuts to a nationally syndicated show talking about preseason football.  I have said it before, but at the bare minimum they could simply have a guy on the radio taking postgame calls from fans, but they don't even do that anymore.  I assume that is because FanDuel or whatever other sports gambling outfit that sponsors the syndicated shows is paying them more for the time slot than the local advertisers.  But who is even listening?

I try my best to stay clear of the  “wagertainment” stuff.  it’s just not interesting to me.  Actually I minimize time spent on anything but the games these days.

But I was a total Scorehead back in the day.  If nothing else it was fun to listen to lineup all day that was Chicago sports focused.  My job back then involved a lot of driving from place to place.  So it was a perfect fit.

Not that they were all GOOD (ehem Mike North) but it was all about my teams so I was hooked.

I really don’t understand Pat McAfee.  I can’t take more than 5 minutes.

No weekends unless he does Bears coverage. Gets to talk more than 10 minutes a day. Probably less money though.

No, they just want a fresh start with the new pairing next weel. Give Haugh some vacation before Bears season.

Marshall Harris doesn’t surprise me. He’s a pleasant enough guy, totally inoffensive, and honestly just kinda boring. A replacement level radio host, if you will. Dunno if they’ll ever find a collection of hosts that’ll have the same juice that Boers and Bernstein had though, perhaps it’s just an era of radio that is over.

Mildly surprised to hear Mully is gone, although from the little bit I’ve heard from him over the past year he sounds ollllllld. Old and tired. Woulda figured he would retire if anything. Some of the segments they have with Biggs are just like… man, there are two guys who just can’t wait to retire. Let em go out to pasture man.

I guess it could be a schedule preference more than anything.  This allows him to work mornings and likely attend his kids' sporting events, etc, so I completely get that.

This has to be a money move though, right?  Mully had been around forever and getting rid of him, plus Harris, and bring in someone new is probably a salary savings somehow...
