Lots of good stuff in here, but two things that stood out especially

Davis was removed prior to the third inning of an AFL game on Monday and hasn’t played since. However, sources indicate that he’s expected to return to game action this weekend.

One concern some had with Mervis was his performance against lefties. According to Cubs internal data, he did well in High-A, but by June, in Double A, he struggled, posting a .286 wOBA. But as was the case with nearly every other aspect of his game, Mervis slowly but surely grew in this area. By July (he was promoted to Triple A late in the month), that wOBA was up to .300, still low, but clearly on the uptick. In August, he only had 17 plate appearances against lefties, but his wOBA jumped to an above-average .360. By September, it all seemed to click. He had 43 plate appearances against lefties and delivered a robust .437 wOBA. In the AFL, Mervis has already slugged a homer. It came off a southpaw.

That's fun. I assume this would be for full-season guys only?

I don't have time now, but I'd be curious to see a speculative list of who those 18 guys would be for the Cubs.

And how many were rotation guys versus relief?

my initial reaction was "well that's okay, take the winter off and just come back at full strength next season" but this actually sounds serious enough that it could have complications in future year(s) if it doesn't heal correctly.

This is a case where they send Canario to Switzerland and get the platelet-rich plasma therapy that they give to elite skiers when they destroy their ankles skiing.

I suffered a bi-mal fracture of my left ankle/leg back in mid-September of 2016. Can't say if it was more or less severe than Canario's (mine was clearly displaced, just shy of being compound), but I had surgery (plate/screws) a few days after, was in a cast for 6 weeks, and was using some combo of walking boot crutches until a bit after new year 2017. Didn't feel like I was back to normal (and running again) until mid-spring, so about 7 months.

Of course Canario is younger than I was, likely in much better shape, and likely will receive more advanced treatments and more intensive PT than I did. But yeah, not an insignificant injury. Feel bad for the kid.

From Bryan Smith @ Bleacher Nation:

I learned on this trip that an agreement was reached with Yonathan Perlaza to return to the organization for 2023 (he was eligible for minor league free agency). This isn’t a huge surprise, as Perlaza was one of the prospects invited to Wrigley Field for a visit in September after hitting .281/.388/.539 in his final 114 Double-A games.

This injury is brutal, and then to now have a twice operated-on shoulder as well, sucks.
Where did you see that the shoulder injury requires surgery?

At least it’s nice the injuries aren’t severe enough to keep him from traveling back to Chicago for the surgeries.

Amaya remains relegated to wearing a walking boot while rehabbing from a Lisfranc fracture suffered Sept. 11 that cost him a chance to move closer to a major-league job.

So instead of getting at-bats and testing his rebuilt right throwing elbow in the Arizona Fall League, Amaya is resigned to receiving treatments and mentally preparing by calling pitches from his couch.

Treatment of the foot is paramount. Amaya hasn’t been allowed to throw out of fear of compensating for his foot and risking injury. He does perform shoulder and elbow exercises and appears identical to his listed 6-2, 230-pound frame.
