Unless Newcomb is way better than his walk rate shows, this seems pretty underwhelming from the braves side, given that they were apparently asking for degrom or Harvey earlier today and then fangraphs was discussing a Simmons/puig trade.

Newcomb is extremely good and a good bet to be a top 25 guy going into 2016. Quite honestly I'm shocked a pitching starved team like the Angels would make this deal unless they know something about Newcomb's arm that others dont.

He seems like the 'big stuff with zero control' guy you absolutely want to sell on before he hits upper levels, IMO. Like a poor man's Aaron Sanchez.

I'm not surprised by it (I think I posted about the Braves dealing Simmons as a possibility a while ago), and I kinda like it. I don't think it it portends a Castro to the Braves trade.

With Albies in the wing (and perhaps with an outside shot of seeing the bigs in late 2016) and the Braves rebuilding, it always made sense for them to, at some point, consider dealing Simmons for some long term assets. I thought it would be more next year than this year and I didn't really expect this sort of deal (taking on a short term veteran in Aybar to get prospects). Still, Newcomb has huge upside and the Braves are seem to do a solid job in molding young arms. Chris Ellis is also a very solid starter with mid-rotation potential. The combination of two solid arm prospects and a stopgap veteran ... I really like this gamble. It's a gamble, as Newcomb could flame out and Ellis has an average fastball, but in their current situation, rebuilding for 2017 on, okay, I like it. To be clear, I get the gamble for Eppler as well, and I like it on that end as well. Simmons should be excellent for them for the next few years, and Eppler must feel like, with his background, he can find high upside arms.

The Braves were never going to get DeGrom, Syndegaard, or Harvey, but if the Mets weren't willing to consider Matz at all ... I would find that odd. Maybe they just aren't huge on Simmons for some reason.

The thing that mildly fascinates me about the trade is I'm curious what impact Kiley McDaniel had on the trade (not saying he made the final call or anything, just curious if he played a role), as he was huge on Ozhaino Albies in his rankings last year.

Angels are showcasing some serious highlight reel defense up the middle with Simmons, Featherston and Trout. Too bad Featherston and Simmons can't hit the baseball.

The fact that it's used for pitching is enough for me to be underwhelmed by the Braves return in this deal.

Gonna get irrationally excited about sending them Castro in a deal for Teheran(and maybe Maybin/Grilli too) now.

Braves may not be done trading fan favs. Sources I have close to team tell me Atlanta has talked with other teams about Freeman & Teheran.

Baez and lower level arm for Teheran and Maybin, who says no?

I wonder if there's a potential 3-team trade possible with us, the Braves and Orioles. Thinking something that involves Gausman and Maybin coming to us, Freeman/Tehran going to the Orioles, and Baez and other stuff (idk what the Orioles system all has and what the Braves would like in ours, maybe Jeimer and Underwood?) going to the Braves.

Braves GM John Coppolella says the team made the deal reluctantly, writes MLB.com’s Mark Bowman. “We didn’t want to trade Andrelton Simmons,” Coppolella says. “But we felt this was too good for us to pass up. We felt like we were getting so much talent back in this deal, that if we didn’t make this trade, it would be very tough for us to keep going forward with our plans.” Interestingly, Bowman implies that the Yankees pursued Simmons last offseason and offered a package that included top prospect Luis Severino.

If that is indeed true, the Braves are stupid. Severino is going to be a stud.

Been some smoke regarding the Cardinals and Freeman.

Angels last year gave 169 plate appearances to Taylor Featherston. All he did was OPS .459.

Clearly not content with that, the Angels just signed Cliff Pennington two years and $3.75 million. He OPS'd .578 last year in 210 at bats. I guess that's technically an upgrade? Angels are really going for the all glove, no hit middle infield this year.
