I'm not a huge defensive metric guy, but I don't think I'd consider Starlin below average. What are you looking at to say that about him. On Fangraphs he looks to be slightly above average to me.

As for trading him, there's no way we get something elite. But I'm definitely thinking we'd get something useful anyway.

he has graded out below average at SS all but two years and is grading out well below average at 2B so far

you're probably looking at his defensive WAR number, which includes a positional adjustment so he's getting credit in his overall value for being a middle infielder. that's why that number is positive (and why rizzo has a hard time not being negative)

Ah crap, you nailed it. I figured there were still plenty of SS that'd be negative. I knew about the position stuff and that Rizzo basically had no shot at being positive. But didnt realize that SS was propped up enough to where below average guys were still positive.

I would expect Starlin could be a pretty good defensive second baseman. He's a -2.5 UZR/150 shortstop for his career. He was not that terrible there. Though, he's always been held back by the sheer amount of errors he's made, and that's what's dragging down his defensive numbers at second right now, too. So maybe the lapses will always hold him back defensively, even at second.

Lester's ERA at 3.35 for the season now. It's been a really quality season for Lester, even factoring in his mild hiccups early in the season. It's too bad that [meaningless] win-loss record looks mediocre, but he's really been a damn fine player all season.

How much we gotta pay Jackson to be our Denorfia next year?

Too much.

If he's offensively productive his defense really doesn't weigh him down significantly; he has dumb, stupid errors that make you curse the heavens, but overall he ends up just being a bit below average.. I'd be plenty happy with an IF of Rizzo-Castro-Russell-Baez.

He's going to be expensive. My guess is he'll get 2/20 somewhere. If so, we'd have to be trading for SP's or using him as our everyday CF most likely, to fit him inside the budget.

i realize that the "mental gaffes" are taken into account in defense statistics (and they should, I suppose). But - and maybe this is meatbally - but I've never felt like Starlin was ever a liability on defense. His range isn't great, but he's always seemingly been quick in this reactions. His arm is more than adequate and as we saw tonight, he's capable of making really great plays. I guess I just feel like defensive metrics have to be taken with a grain of salt. It's the one (and last) side of baseball, to me, that isn't really all that easy or accurate to grade out.

That being said, since I "feel" he's average to maybe a tick about average, anybody else could "feel" the opposite.

mental gaffes? pretty sure those are actual physical mistakes bringing his grade down...not stuff like "oh whoops i forgot to cover" or whatever

defensive metrics aren't perfect, but i'd say your anecdotal observations should be taken with much more of a grain of salt.

Castro's season is one of the craziest things ever. He spent 3 months incapable of getting a hit to save his life, and now he's hitting over .400 in his last 100+ PA
