I'll still always love Bryan LaHair, MLB All-Star

wtf man

i thought you didn't even watch the cubs for the past 5 years

now you love that miserable freak?

I just love that him going to an All-Star game happened. That a guy had to put all his concentrated talent into a 2 month window on a really awful team and that earned him a spot. I had to check and didn't even realize he never played another inning of major league baseball after 2012. Bryan Lahair, ML All-Star.

I followed the team intermittently between 2012-2014. :hello:

Man, the Cubs have quite dilemma this offseason. Between good Castro, Baez, Coghlan and Soler and 2 positions to play them.

Yep. We've got some flexibility for sure.

i realize that the "mental gaffes" are taken into account in defense statistics (and they should, I suppose). But - and maybe this is meatbally - but I've never felt like Starlin was ever a liability on defense. His range isn't great, but he's always seemingly been quick in this reactions. His arm is more than adequate and as we saw tonight, he's capable of making really great plays. I guess I just feel like defensive metrics have to be taken with a grain of salt. It's the one (and last) side of baseball, to me, that isn't really all that easy or accurate to grade out.

That being said, since I "feel" he's average to maybe a tick about average, anybody else could "feel" the opposite.

mental gaffes? pretty sure those are actual physical mistakes bringing his grade down...not stuff like "oh whoops i forgot to cover" or whatever

defensive metrics aren't perfect, but i'd say your anecdotal observations should be taken with much more of a grain of salt.

i'm talking about mental gaffes that lead to errors. a statistic. but not ones that are typical or speak to his ability as a defender.

i have no idea how you think those aren't a part of his ability as a defender. we've been seeing him play for 5 years. that is what he is.

Because they still feel a bit flukey to me. But maybe he will always make a certain # of "dumb" plays every year. Maybe you're right. I clearly said my view may be meatbally and wrong. I never said anything with conviction, only stated my opinion.

The last thing I'll say is that you and I and everyone here can probably agree that defensive metrics are the most difficult of any of the current advanced metrics to accurately reflect. They can sometimes vary greatly depending on who the source is that is tracking them. There's a bit more room for "observational analysis" than any other facet of the game. However, I will be the first to say I would to get up and walk from the table when it comes to those most qualified to weigh in on those analyses. I was simply stating my humble opinion.

Castro has always seemed like a guy that would do well in the playoffs. I mean my logic is pretty meatbally, but the whole "not smart enough to overthink" in the playoffs seems to apply. Plus, he's one of the few guys in the lineup who doesn't strike out ton, so I think he'd be a guy that could come up with big hits simply based on that fact.

It's not meant to call him stupid. Just that he may not get overwhelmed by the hugeness of the situation.

and also quite ironic considering a lot of people/posters (maybe/probably not raw, just some) seemed to think that he was thinking "too much" and needed to be benched in order to clear his head and quit pressing. I can't imagine anything more pressing than a one game, do-or-die playoff.

I see it. Think lovable, gif-inspiring, clutch Castro from the first month of the season.

Lol 11th straight loss for the Reds.

It looks very unlikely we will be able to catch the Pirates and play the WC game at Wrigley...their final series is against the Reds. Can't see them losing 2 out of 3 to that team.

I like the idea someone mentioned of how Cubs fans being able to watch the Cubs win that game on the screens at Wrigley might exorcise a bit of the terror they displayed constantly in 2007 and 2008.

They're not doing the viewing party at Wrigley anymore
