Have the Cubs produced more Cubs position players in 2014-15 than in previous 30 years?

Posted

Guess this question is mostly about how many of these guys we think are panning out long term at this point...and to put some perspective to it.

I posed it this way so that guys like Palmeiro and Donaldson wouldn't muddy it up.

For the longest time, before Starlin, the anecdote was that we hadn't produced a real everyday position player since Grace (Theriot?)...just over the past year there's been Soler, Russell, Bryant, Schwarber...(Baez?)

I think you have to count Geovany Soto and cannot count Russell.

God damnit...I knew I had forgotten someone.

I'm 50/50 on the Russell thing I guess.

And as much as I hate to say it, does Soler really count yet?

I think there's enough there for me, personally, to think he will at least have a career as a competent major league regular.

Some might think otherwise. I know Kyle does.

You can't count him. I think the story is they spent thirty years between Grace and Soto. That is the reason this organization has only been good for a couple seasons at a time. For a few years they produced nobody, but when they actually put effort into the farm they stupidly focused on nothing but pitchers. They deliberately emphasized pitching prospects over hitters and came away with quite a few good pitchers that didn't last, and no bats.

The dongs will come and Kyle will be wrong.

Hey, I'm praying for him to be amazing. I just think right now it's a tad premature.

Does Rizzo count?

He counts even less than Russell.

Absolutely. He made his freakin' MLB debut with another team.

Palmeiro was pretty good and within the last 30 years.

I still feel confident that Soler is going to be just fine. I was definitely having a brain freeze as to why Russell wasn't counting. The really fucked up thing though is if Houston hadn't taken Correa, it seemed extremely likely he was falling to us at 6 that year.

On a different note that's being touched on in the minor league forum, Almora is at least attempting to put himself back into the conversation himself.

Can you really count any of these guys yet? #JeromeWaltonDwightSmithBrantBrownRickWilkins

I think you have to be a regular player for at least a year and half, maybe two before you are established...no?

I'm certainly expecting most of these guys to be regulars in 3 years time but I thought Hee Sop Choi was as sure a prospect as there was.

I read what you wrote in the title, and then didn't understand why Palmeiro didn't count. So I posted that.

if he counts for having one halfway decent season as a regular, then rizzo and russell count as home grown. hell, theriot had better seasons as a cub.

I was going to argue that Palmeiro played in an all star game representing the Cubs, but his numbers that season look mediocre, at least for an all star.

That's kind of a weird way of posing the question, I guess. In order for it to really be "produced by the Cubs" I'd probably want the criteria to be:

+ Drafted by Cubs

+ Debuted with Cubs

+ Had X seasons in MLB as a starter

I think he had a high average at the break and then Derniered it the rest of the way.

He's 24 next Opening Day, and he's having a 0.1 fWAR season despite a .380 or whatever BABIP. He has a long way to go before he proves he belongs in the majors, let alone as a regular.
