I think the Kobe comparison (ie if that happened now he would get railroaded and he's fortunate it happened in 03) is somewhat true.

But the Kobe thing would be a more apt comparison if this scandal had been toews. The more likeable bigger star. Kane, at least in my view, is not a hugely popular figure.

Kane was #1 in jersey sales last year.

yeah, i was gonna say...as an outsider, that's the exact opposite impression i have. toews the better overall player who as thought of as sort of boring (like tim duncan) while kane is the more popular (and flashy) one.

I swear this isn't a shot at a hockey, buuuuuuuut....doesn't it kind of speak to hockey's relatively insular popularity compared to the other big sports with how little coverage this has gotten? Who are good players to compare him to in other sports? In terms of baseball, would it be safe to safe he's kinda been the Mike Trout or Bryce Harper of hockey, or is that overstating his talent? I just thought he was considered one of the very best in the game, and if it was someone of that stature in the other sports ESPN alone would be going nuts with hourly updates and the like.

he's very good and exciting but he's not best player in the game good (like trout or harper). his teammate just might be, though.

either way, you're right about how much more attention this would get if he played another sport.

toews is still better than kane, but i think it's a lot closer than the consensus opinion would be. i think they're both in the 7-10 range.

An off-duty Buffalo police lieutenant served as Patrick Kane’s chauffeur on the night the hockey star was accused of raping a young woman in his Town of Hamburg home.

Lt. Thomas English told The Buffalo News that he drove Kane, the alleged rape victim, her female friend and a male friend of Kane’s to the National Hockey League player’s home on Old Lake Shore Road early on the morning of Aug. 2.

This is what English said he told investigators:

He was not with Kane or at Kane’s house during the time the woman has alleged that Kane overpowered and raped her, leaving her with a scratched leg and bite marks on both her shoulders.

But English said he was with Kane and the alleged victim, and other friends, for a couple of hours early that morning at SkyBar, a downtown nightclub, before driving Kane and the three others to Hamburg. He said that after dropping them off, he left.

English disputed the accounts of three sources – a friend of the alleged victim, a law enforcement source and a source in the legal community – who told The News that the alleged rape victim went to Kane’s home because of her friend’s urging.

According to English, it was the other way around. The alleged victim urged her female friend to go with them to Kane’s home, said English, who identified the accuser by name.

just think of all the gross reasons why someone like kane might want an off-duty police lieutenant as his chauffeur

i don't think that's at all unusual, is it?

long-term situations like that? it says kane has employed him for 5 years. maybe it's common and i've just never heard of it.

Boy, that the cop has deleted all of his social media somehow hasn't raised a peep from the dickweeds at Sportsmockery.com, as opposed to their detailed breakdown of the accuser's social media and her deletion of it. How about that!

Was there anything on his social media aside from frat boyish behavior with the Stanley Cup?

And yes Dexter, many athletes employ security in the form of off duty cops and former military, especially star players.

Nobody's really expecting anything incriminating on his social media; just pointing out the double standard. It shouldn't be seen as unusual these days when people kill their social media accounts when they end up in any kind of negative story, yet sites like Sports Mockery of course dig into the victim for doing it, convinced that anything she posted on there must be some kind of smoking gun that proves she's trying to just frame their beloved hero.

Is it common for it to take this long for charges to be filed in rape cases? I'm wondering if there isn't enough evidence at this point.

Waiting on forensics. There's no real rush.

Where are we, the second week? I am not at all certain but I would think it is very common for charges to not be filed until well past this point, like a month plus after the accusations are made.

i'm not saying him simply being a celebrity makes it different, you're still being lazy, or willfully ignorant, it's the fact that he has money and is an easy target, especially acting the way he does. you think people won't do unethical things for money?

I don't know if this applies to you specifically, but this thought that sports stars are commonly falsely accused of rape to extort money is nonsense. It happens far far less than you think.

Edit: I just caught up on the entire convo and see this was kind of already pointed out. My bad for repetitiveness.

I'm not saying extorting celebrities for money is common, but you speak it like a scientific fact, i don't even know how you could begin to quantify that. Where is your science?

In this instance, it doesn't even matter if it's a common, it's a motive.

and both parties here are absolutely potential victims. if he did it, she's the victim, if she's lying, he is. i don't see why that's so [expletive] absurd, you're not thinking reasonably about this at all.

Because, again, it's much more likely that she's the victim.

As passionate as you are I seriously doubt you're so determined to be evenhanded when it comes to things like, say, police violence. You're not being "fair" here; you're just as swayed by personal opinion as I am.

Nah. I'm being fair, my dad's a cop, my uncle's a cop i have 4 cousins that are cops, i want to be fair to them. I don't know what exactly happened in the case of Darren Wilson, I'm more interested in the public reaction to Ferguson, and the overarching prevalence of racism in policework, not to mention the need for cops to be in touch and connected with their communities. But that's off-topic, it just shows i'm not a screaming meatball on that subject, either.

I'm surprised you're so biased on this topic, and so quick to assume my position because i want facts and answers in this specific instance, and not general rape accusation probabilities as they pertain to regular people.

Posted

I'm "biased" (AKA have an opinion like every human being ever does about anything) because 99.9% of the time I'm pro-victim in these types of cases. I really don't care about being fair to accused rapists and sex offenders because the vast majority of the time nothing ever happens to them and they get away with it. These are the types of crimes where the victim is fighting a supremely lopsided and uphill battle the entire way, and that's just magnified when the person accused is rich and/or famous. And dancing around this notion that rich and famous people are dramatically more likely to have false rape/sexual assault charges leveled a them to the point that it inexplicably makes them exempt or separate or whatever from "common people" sexual assault is just silly.

You can pretend like you're always evenhanded, but the reality is your history is packed with you ranting about sending people to gulags and the like. Obviously there's a ton of hyperbole in play, but there's been plenty of events and issues where you've obviously made up your mind about which side your on regardless of how it actually plays out, just like I'm doing here. And I'm not calling you out as doing anything wrong with that; it's what we all do. It's just hypocritical and ultimately pretty meaningless when people start calling out others for being "biased" when it's clear the reason they're doing so is because they don't like what's being accused of someone they admire or like. We're not journalists or a jury or anything along those lines; we can think whatever we want based on we know so far. I'm under zero obligation to be equally fair to Patrick Kane and his accuser.

I guess it only has been about a couple weeks. Sure seems a lot longer than that for some reason.
