if you can't positively ID a gun or knife used, don't have witnesses, tearing, restraint bruising, or rohypnol in your system i have to think it's got to be really really hard to prove that someone raped you, unfortunately. i wouldn't even know how you'd go about establishing that.

there were reports of bite marks and there could very easily be witnesses, as another girl was there.

bite marks aren't really signs of rape. signs of assholery and douchebaggery and depravity, yes.

sulley, don't be That (SVU) Guy.

so the default is that Kane is someone capable of rape? how would any of us know this?

what the [expletive] is sully doing here?

'

tell me why you think he's guilty? i don't think there's any reason to think one way or another right now.

If there's confusion, I'm saying that Kane is probably guilty of something, because there's been no one speaking up for him, defending him publicly.

that's ridiculous. plenty of guilty fools loudly proclaim their innocence and bash their victims.

That's not what he said you dope.

"no one from his camp has come out and proclaimed his innocence, therefore he is probably guilty."

that's nearly literally what banedon said. I am saying that that doesn't make sense because tons of guilty people make official statements proclaiming their innocence.

he's saying innocent people don't stay quiet (which may or may not be valid) which isn't at all refuted by saying some guilty people don't stay quiet either.

maybe. but him coming out and proclaiming his innocence wouldn't prove anything one way or another, that was the line of logic i was following.

sulley, there's rarely any kind of smoking gun piece of evidence in a rape case (or most criminal cases, period), so when sports fans suddenly dig in their heels and take this absolutist position that "nothing has been proven" it's pretty obnoxious. We're all just discussing this in the court of public opinion here, and yeah, based on his track record and the accusation it's not a stretch for anyone to think that he did this.

What it may indicate is that they want and have a good idea this will all be settled out of criminal court (a rumor that has surfaced). The denials usually come as a way to wage the PR battle, but if his handlers or whatever think they'll settle civilly and criminal charges are dropped, they want to ignore and sweep as much under the rug as possible rather than draw any attention to the matter.

it's not a stretch for anyone to believe he didn't do it, either. of course nothing has been proven, but arguing that he's guilty or innocent is like trying to argue that Christianity is more realistic to believe than Hinduism. it's all based on personal bias at this point.

Most things in life are based on personal opinion. It usually only becomes "bias" when someone doesn't like that opinion. All people are doing are judging him based on his own history and reputation and the information available and rumored. It's just that some of those people are bad and think he didn't do it and he's being set up.

we don't know anything, and that sucks.

i think what people are thinking isn't necessarily that he did it, but that if/when he gets off, they have no way of knowing for sure that he didn't do it (along with a history of reasons to think he just might have), and that's something to be bummed about for blackhawks/kane fans.

Posted

At a minimum it's going to make me a little uncomfortable when he plays well. At a maximum I'm going to want the Hawks to get the biggest haul they can while he is still a prime player.

I'm not sure where it will ultimately fall but the history plays into it either way.

it's bias when the opinion becomes something absolute, and based on personal feelings of disgust or the opposite of disgust.

Basically he's complaining about people not prefacing their opinions with "I think" or "I believe" or "maybe" about Kane because he's a fan. It's a typical cop-out; people start acting like everyday conversations are supposed to be conducted like idealized news reports or courtroom arguments when they don't like the opinion being expressed.

I mean, as someone who got ripped apart a few days ago for a couple potentially poorly chosen words in a long post, I think posting something like "Yeah, but we'll definitely remember the time Patrick Kane raped that woman" seems pretty absolute.

Of course it is; me saying that actually means absolutely nothing. sulley spouts outrageously absolute hyperbole all the time. Who gives a [expletive]? It's just ridiculous when people who have no problem saying things like that suddenly get all defensive and want everything to be fair and balanced when it's about something they like. Nothing's stopping him about spouting off about how much he thinks Kane is innocent.

Well, except for common decency, since Kane totally did it.

no, not that simple to recognize. within the opinions themselves is rooted a clear bias, here, an absolute assumption born of disgust, that he raped that girl.

So what? I think he's a scumbag who's probably crossed the line before.
