I'm guessing Kane goes nowhere. There'll be a settlement, and those that want to believe that Kane is innocent are able to do so, while plenty of us struggle to watch a great player on our favorite team that we know is a gross human being.

instead of just knowing that a certain anonymous percentage of players on our favorite team are awful human beings

i am so conflicted about sports these days

The sad thing is, I'm sure fans will eventually get over it and go back to cheering for him. It might take a few years and/or another Cup run but a large percentage of people are all about redemption stories.

I really, really hope it doesn't get to 'redemption story' status, especially if this ends in a settlement where nothing is revealed. Sure, as time goes on, people will be more willing to separate this event from their team (see the Lakers or the Steelers), but I don't want it to ever get to a 'he's overcome so much' angle.

Fortunately this seems to be a different age when it comes to forgetting about these things like Kobe and Roethlisberger benefited from.

I would hope we've improved as a society. Then again (and yes, different cases that have gone in different ways)....when's the last time people have brought up Castro's sexual assault issue?

Not enough, but that also died pretty fast. That said, a lot has changed even in just 4 years.

I thought I read somewhere that the victim can't take money for dropping criminal charges.

People will definitely forget. If the Hawks want to trade Kane they will be able to do so and Kane would be foolish to stand in the way provided that he wasn't getting traded to Buffalo or a team like Phoenix. I heard a rumor about Kane for Hedman which was pretty intriguing for both sides.

Can take money to prevent a civil lawsuit though. And then the prosecutor can just drop criminal charges.

Very good post, but that last paragraph really is pretty much how I feel....

Yeah just read it. I guess it depends on your opinion of Kane and what you think happened after this all plays out. I think everyone does a certain amount of separating the person from the athlete when they watch sports, as I think everyone generally agrees most athletes are terrible people. Obviously, rape is an entirely different level from 'terrible person'. So if I come to that conclusion, I agree with what the article says. Where I end up falling...I'm not sure yet.

He's right though....it becomes really, really difficult to cheer for the Hawks on a game to game basis if you believe the accusations. I go to 8-10 games a year, and probably a third of the goals that are scored...you don't even know who scored them until a few seconds after. Do you want to have to hold back until you get the detail of every play to determine he wasn't involved before you allow yourself to cheer or celebrate? Big picture, you can maybe separate him from the rest of the team and be able to appreciate whatever success the other 21 guys are able to achieve. Moment by moment though....not fun.

When was that statement given? They must have an agreement reached -- there's no way he would come out and risk sabotaging talks.

it looks like his lawyer (er, agent) is wearing mascara and belongs in fallout boy circa 2025 or something in that screen grab

Sorry, $10 million, 8 figures. I honestly edited that 10 seconds later and there were 3 responses. Sheesh.

I'm not sure what the going rate is on rape hush money but that seems high.

Yea I'm guessing like 1.5-3M?
