Can we discuss why in the [expletive] Rondon wasn't the closer last night? Strop clearly can't handle the pressure, especially vs. the Cardinals and Rondon hasn't given up a run in a month. I get that Maddon wants him to set up Motte, but that was a Yostian move last night "Hector is our 8th inning guy". [expletive].

The fact that Motte unseated Rondon to begin with always struck me as weird. Someone as statistically open-minded as Joe had (and has) to see that Rondon is the superior pitcher.

closer isn't necessarily where you use your superior pitcher

This has to be a horrible off day for them, because it is killing me. It's my bricks to carry, but it took me about two hours to get to sleep after that HR. Who spells their Jhonny? A [expletive], that's who.

I agree, but Motte has almost exclusively pitched the 9th for some time now regardless of matchups - and the flexibility to play matchups is precisely why Joe hasn't specifically named him the closer, isn't it?

So now he's allowed 3 runs in 18 appearances...and cost us 2 games vs. the Cardinals. Doesn't make me feel any better.

Does it make you feel better to think of it this way: In that time period, Strop helped us win 14 games, by pitching scoreless innings in high-leverage situations, often against the heart of the order.

Or you could continue to be mad about a guy giving up 3 -- 3! -- runs in 18 appearances. Either way...

I would suggest not flipping out every time a relief pitcher gives up some runs, though. They all do. And fairly often. It's kind of a thankless job, when troglodytes like you crucify them for giving up a run once, while never acknowledging the times they perform well.

I just think Rondon would have been a better choice there. Strop has been great, but I trust Rondon more with the game on the line.

Could anyone else literally not fall asleep after that game?

took me maybe 7 minutes

I just switched to Conan after that HR and continued my day normally.

If the Cubs can make you lose sleep (at this point) theres something wrong with you

Yeah, I got ready for bed, started watching MST3K and was out in maybe 5 minutes.

That's why I asked. I guess there is, then, cause I couldn't fall asleep for a good 90 minutes after that game. That [expletive] hurt. How do you guys just let it go like that? It stuck in my mind like a thorn.

They're still in good shape and there were a lot of things to like even though they lost and the Cardinals seem to show real fear for once. This was basically a stay of execution where they get to nervously celebrate after seeing a glimpse into the terrible future that awaits them.

Games get to me longer than they should, too, but I'm the opposite - I'm far more likely to have trouble sleeping after an awesome win.

Losing to the Cardinals has very little impact on the trajectory of the Cubs season, which is stil pretty positive.

Yeah, I don't have any hope for the division, but losing games in that fashion just takes a little longer for me to get over. I wasn't more upset after this one than I was when we got Goldschmidted, for instance. Losing games when you have the lead while the opponent has 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th really sucks.

It stung for a bit, but I refuse to let the performance of a professional sports team, something utterly beyond my control, dictate my well-being. So I got over it in a hurry.

Not saying you're wrong for letting it bother you. We're just wired differently.

I lack motivation for tomorrow. I lack the energy to make fun of Seinfeld, or BBT, or Gordon Beckham. I hope I feel better in the morning. [expletive] Jhonny Peralta, that piece of [expletive].
