You have to wonder if Theo is worried that a long-term benching of Castro is problematic - concerns that he could be a cancer if he's not starting. Otherwise not much incentive to dump him for scraps now.

How often do you actually see or hear about a player turning out to be the much vaunted "clubhouse cancer" if they're not a hyper-intense weirdo or an out and out psycho like Milton Bradley? Castro has always seemed really laid back and good-natured; hell, it's one of the things that the people who don't like him tend to scream about the most.

Ew, Jedd Gyroko. Starlin at least was good as recently as last season. If he's a throw in with Ross, then whatever, I guess it's not so bad. But it'd better not be Starlin for Gyorko straight up. I don't think that's what Phil was saying, or at least I hope not.

Yeah, that seems like a pretty ridiculous and pointless swap unless it's part of something bigger.

i hope if we have to get gyorko to sit on the bench he can play some OF along with 3b 2b 1b backup.

but yeah kimbrel and ross would be huge for this team ---

Hopefully teams are busy talking themselves into the idea that he can rebound with his bat, and don't bother to notice that how badly he's deteriorating as a shortstop.

Strangely enough, despite the routine errors he's made, UZR rates 2015 as his second best defensive season of his career. DRS and dWAR are similar or worse than his previous seasons.

How do you figure that? Fangraphs doesn't even have this as his worst year defensively. BR has it barely off or essentially the same as most of his other years. There really hasn't been a significant downturn for him defensively this season.

From CCO:

According to Jim Bowden, the Cubs are talking to the Padres about a deal that would include RHP Tyson Ross and RHP Craig Kimbrel. The Cubs would send a package of players that would include Starlin Castro and Carl Edwards Jr. The Padres would prefer Javier Baez to be in the deal. The Cubs do not want to trade Baez and would rather Castro be included.

Do other teams still look at Edwards as a top pitching prospect? That'd be pretty sweet if they do. Really interested to see the Cubs' lineup tonight..

I'd be quite agreeable to a deal with those guys as the headliners. I seriously doubt the FO is going to move Javy right now.

I think he'd still be valued as a good prospect - some of his peripherals are terrific, and he's reportedly hitting 96-97 out of the pen. But I don't think he'd be viewed as an elite, centerpiece guy in a big deal like this - he's been moved to the pen, had shoulder trouble and struggles to throw strikes.

I'd be thrilled to see Castro and Edwards for Ross and Kimbrel, but we'd have to include more - probably much more. Maybe add McKinney and Underwood.

I love this whole "would prefer Starlin Castro" over Javier Baez. Well yeah of course, I would much rather give someone a bunch of coal than a bag of diamonds, as well.

If it means "don't bother asking for Baez, because we're not trading him for anything you have" I'm all in favor of it.

Ok the gap isn't THAT wide. Javy is more like a handful of magic beans.

Edwards is basically the most unhittable pitcher in baseball right now, so there's at least something there:

If Javier Baez is a bag of diamonds, what's in Kris Bryant's bag?

Considering that the plan was to purchase a pitching staff anyways, i dont see the problem giving up some guys like this for ROSS and KIMBREL.. i think ross is very underrated..

If Theo gets to keep Baez & Torres while jettisoning Castro's contract he's not gonna be able to hide his erection as he signs off on the deal.
