I just noticed today that Fowler is on a one year deal. Not as knowledgeable as others about our farm system, do we have an in house future at CF? I know Almora seems like the obvious choice but his bat seems quite pedestrian.

fowler can have an extension when he gets his obp back over .350

Yeah, Fowler isn't really producing offensively quite like the Fowler you'd expect/hope for. Overall he's been fine, but his value has been helped by him not sucking defensively like he usually does. If they can sign him for a year or two, great. If he wants more, paaaaaaaaaasssssssssss.

He's getting babipd. He's about as much of a lock as there is for that kind of obp on this team short of bryzzo.

And even while being babipd, he's on pace for 3 WAR

walks are down, line drives are down, flyballs are up, hard contact percentage is down. i'm not saying .290 is the "correct" babip, but i'm also not super confident that .340 or whatever is either.

I'd like him back on a 1 year deal if he'd agree to it.

It's too bad Almora hasn't shown more with the bat, leaving us with no other good options.

Yup. He's really not getting hard-lucked too far off from what he "should" be at; that OBP is a good 40-60 points off what one would hope for or even expect. And again, that value is propped up by his defense not sucking. Are he and Coghlan examples of them knowing how to fix guys along those lines?

Ehh, Fowler is just in a slump, so of course his numbers are depressed. If he'd do a 3-year extension i'd sign it today

To me, there is no reason to do that. I'd rather they make him a qualifying offer, which would be pretty expensive at about 14.2 million, but it would be for one season only. And if another team signs him, take the first round pick and move on.

thats cool too, im not real up to date on his contract other than it being up this year. I'm just saying there's no reason to fret about him for the next few years. He's 29 and is good at baseball. He's a really safe bet to be good into his early 30s.

I'd be surprised if Fowler accepts a QO. It would be closer to 16M though.

yeah, especially if his defensive issues have been fixed with the positioning stuff they said they did with him.

mojo mentioned coghlan, whose defensive improvement i'm not so much sold on, but fowler was a guy who looked to have all the physical tools to be a good OFer and just wasn't for some reason.

Not sure if this has ever been discussed or if people think it's overblown, but my only other concern with Fowler is his history of lower body injuries. He has missed a fair amount of games in his career because of injuries.

I like Fowler. I do. I'm just not sure I'm that excited about going too many years for a lot of dollars for him. I'd probably be talking differently if he had a .370 OBP, though.

What is this 1-2 year deal for Fowler stuff? You hope he takes Granderson money and you sprint to give him that.

what was that, 60/4?

I'd be fine with that.
