If Rizzo, Bryant, and Russell keep doing what they're doing, Schwarber keeps up his beastly ways, Soler and Baez continue to progress, and Castro can at least stabilize as a .7something OPS, 10-12 HR SS, I think we can get by with Almora's pedestrian bat and potential gold glove.

Or we could go get an actually good player to play CF instead.

How silly of me. I didn't realize that we'd closed the book on the 21 year old top 50 prospect who's in a league full of 23-25 year olds. Moving on then.

What does "close the book" mean?

We're not releasing him tomorrow or anything. But the reasonable thing to do is, when discussing the team's future, not include the guy who can't hit at all in the minors.

If he ever changes his performance and becomes worthy of being in these conversations, we can always add him back.

If Dexter Fowler does somehow finish the season with a slash anywhere like the current .239/.319/.388 he has, I'd be all for bringing up Almora and let him suck just a little more than that while probably playing better defense and making $15 million less than what some want to give Fowler.

Almora would probably suck a lot more than just a little more than that.

I'd be fine with Fowler for 4/50-60, but the guy I really want is Jason Heyward.

2016

9 Heyward

5/8 Bryant

3 Rizzo

7 Soler

2 Schwarber/Montero

6 Castro

8/5 Baez

4 Russell

1 Lester/Arrieta/Price or Zimmerman/Hammel/Hendricks

Mother of God

There's two bad players and at least one mediocre one in that lineup. Maybe not "mother of god" worthy.

So you want him dead?

Kyle has the death sentence on twelve systems.

I will kill every Almora I can get my hands on, until they are as dead as their dragons, and then I will piss on their graves.

We have to resign Fowler or no one will be pissing anywhere, ever.

I'd keep Fowler if he'd agree to a 2 yr deal with a mutual option for a 3rd. Mckinney will be here by then.

McKinney has played 82 games in the Cubs organization and 4 of them have been in Cf, none this year. He's almost certainly not a centerfielder.

Almora is the guy the Cubs see in center for the future and they love his glove. If the Cubs are going to trade a prospect, I have to imagine Almora's name has to come up a lot. They are shying away from trading their big time prospects and while Almora is good, he doesn't project to be the hitters that Bryant, Schwarber, Russell, and Baez do.

How much can you get for CF Darwin Barney?

Barney's AA OPS was more than 150 points greater than what Almora's is now. He still has the physical gifts to be a productive major leaguer, but he is 0.0 percent a part of the team's future plans until he can put together at least several hundred PAs as a productive hitter in the high minors.

I hear what you're saying, but let's be fair. What were there ages in AA?

I don't really think the age matters for the point here, which is that Almora is clearly well below a trajectory that has any impact on a MLB roster. Like I said I don't think Almora is done forever, but given the topic of this thread, Almora has zero impact on the conversation unless things change over an extended stretch.

Oh, that part I agree with wholeheartedly.

I hadn't realized how poor Almora was playing in the minors. Yikes. I take back my hope for him.

I hate the idea of giving St Louis a compensation draft pick.

Fowler at 4/60 makes sense in a lot of ways.

I guess I have to doubt myself a bit because so many on here think that Fowler can and will get that type of contract, but I just still don't see it happening. Nobody is going to make that kind of investment in a 30-year-old CF with a history of injuries coming off this kind of season so far. He will have to get hot and really improve on his numbers while staying healthy to get that money.

But, again, I acknowledge nobody agrees so maybe I'm way wrong.

I don't want the Cubs to be the team that gives him four years, but it would be explainable if he kept up his pace this season pre-inury. Wins are never more expensive than in FA.

I'd still be wary. So many of his key offensive numbers are below or well below his career numbers.
