The NHL's salary cap is really horrible. It seems to me like the players really got screwed when they agreed to it (and obviously certain teams did too).

why do you think it is horrible?

NHL has guaranteed contracts, unlike the NFL, and guys hit free agency at incredibly young ages. There's no 6-year service time before you make any money. And it doesn't have the salary cap shenanigans that the NBA allows.

I think the cap, which also came with a floor when implemented, works as advertised and players are as good off as they have ever been.

so he has a 3.3m cap hit this year then it goes up to 4.55.

They still have a lot of cap work to do.

Yeah I'm thinking Sharp and Bickell are still both leaving.

Saad conf call beginning shortly.

This is run almost exactly like my confernece calls at work. No one mutes their phones, people keep beeping in and out etc

Yeah, I didn't listen long. I'd rather just see the quotes later.

I guess I'm resigned to the idea that this was the right thing to do. I'm definitely not happy about it, though.

Yeah, right thing to do after not trading sharp last year. Default right thing to do. The two greatest words in the English language, de fault

I love all the Monday morning QB from you involving Patrick Sharp. He is a season removed from his best as a Hawk, yet Stan should have traded him?

As for the others who were saying they should have paid Saad whatever. It sucks losing Saad but he isn't worth 6.5 million with or without Sharp on the roster. If they would have kept Saad then you can also say goodbye to Seabrook, Krueger, Shaw at minimum after next season. Also the Cap could very well go down after next season with the Canadian dollar in bad shape. So you would be fine icing a team of Toews,Kane,Keith,Hammer,Hossa, Crawford and the Rockford Ice Hogs?

So Saad didn't know how much he was asking for?

Haha I tried to listen to the recording of the call, this is embarassingly terrible. Saad can't even hear the questions becuase of a horrible echo. Come on CBJ!

I don't think anyone really thought he would be gone at any point prior to Monday night. But he and or his agent got greedy, his agent got him paid though.

Well, I will be polite and just say there isn't much reason for you to know anything about what I have posted in the past.

But it is very inaccurate to call it monday morning QB when I've been hoping and calling for a Sharp trade for a very long time.

Well, probably. He still hasn't officially signed a new deal with CBJ.

Seems like they gave Anisimov the Saad money.

That's a good point. I'm assuming the deal is contingent on him signing the contract with Columbus. If he's crushed....

Oh I have read enough of your posts in these threads to get a pretty good idea.

Great, you have been calling for a Sharp trade for a very long time, you also hate Crawford's contract. Not really much to pat yourself on the back over.

Not sure why you would assume that. No way is it contingent.

Well the Hawks already signed an extension with Anisimov, which I assume they couldn't do if the deal was contingent. CBJ can still match any offer sheet, which they'll presumably do.

Not patting myself anywhere, just pointing out the inaccuracy of your attempted insult.

So they could presumably have some other team steal him away immediately. I guess you can say they'll match any offer but that's a pretty significant gamble, no? What if someone gets stupid?

That is better than I thought but I still don't like salary caps (or MLB's service time/crappy minor league pay or the NFL's non-guaranteed contracts).

Uh yeah. You don't trade guys because they aren't good. Coming off his best season doesn't matter when he was going into his age 32 season and seeing a decent sized increase in pay. The Hawks were clearly going into a cap crunch as Kane, Toews, Crawford, Saad and others were all going to be coming up on contract years and Sharp, while good, was clearly not as much of a building block for long term stability as any other key player after 2013.

As for the 2nd paragraph, I think I would have been OK with losing those 3 and keeping Saad (though I am also Ok with this trade as is). I think the Hawks could have gotten a decent amount for Seabs, plus the return for Sharp, Bickell, Kruger, and Shaw. A team of Toews, Kane, Saad, Keith, Hammer, Hossa, Crow and Rockford is still probably pretty good. Maybe not championship caliber, but they'd have a shot. Basically that's what the Pens and Caps are.

Well, that's what happens when teams trade for pending restricted free agents.

Bowman said sullenly: “You can never look backwards. You’ve got to look forward.”

Now, the heat previously on Bowman is squarely on Kekalainen. The Blue Jackets have until noon on Wednesday to work out a new contract with Saad or he will be subjected to offer sheets from the 29 other clubs.

Kekalainen vowed in a conference call with reporters that he would match any offer sheet presented to Saad. Columbus has more than enough cap space - and Kekalainen was already working on a new deal with Saad’s agent, Lewis Gross, but anticipated it would take a little time.

Kekalainen said the Blue Jackets would not have presented an offer sheet for Saad on Wednesday, but the prospect of one - coupled with Saad’s demands - likely sprung the trade into action. Chicago was more interested in a short-term stopgap contract; Saad wanted long-term security.

If Saad kept progressing, into what Joel Quenneville believed would be one of the top power forwards in the game, the Blackhawks were going to need to pay dearly either way.
