To me, it doesn't even matter, because Theo has already done everything that needs to be done in order to avoid losing a grievance by the MLBPA by stating he has NEVER started a rookie on opening day, excluding foreign professional players. As long as he were to stick to that story, there is nothing else he needs to do in order to protect the team from a frivolous lawsuit.

Isn't Theo's reasoning for not starting a guy in the majors on Opening Day to avoid the pressure of Opening Day or some such nonsense? How would somebody being from a different country as a rookie help to bring less pressure?

I can't believe the Cubs are making decisions based on the off chance that they would get a moron arbitrator. You don't make decisions b/c you have a 0.001% chance of losing the lottery in decision makers.

So I guess the logical conclusion is that they think it's higher than 0.001%. It's not nearly as clear-cut as some fans want to believe.

That is only the logical conclusion if the Cubs actually do wait beyond the point where they no longer technically "have to" wait.

To see some people's misguided interpretations of the CBA, they shouldn't have to do anything, they could say "we're keeping him down to gain an extra year of service, so stick it."

The entire point is kind of that there's not supposed to be a magic day.

says who? is this some rule?

Says some people's interpretation of labor law.

I'm not an expert in the field, but when the idea that there could be an arbitration hearing for lack of good faith is put forward, and all the sides are acting like it's a plausible outcome, I'll assume it's a plausible outcome.

Theo is the one who stated he has never brought up a rookie on opening day. Not Pedroia, not Ellsbury, not Youkilis, etc... He has started a foreign player on opening day, maybe Dice-K?

I really don't know how that relates to his "pressure situations" argument, but I would agree that a foreign player has way more pressure than a minor leaguer getting his first major league start. Theo can argue that the major league contract pretty much ensures they have to start them at the big league level.

A major league contract does nothing of the sort.

Matsuzaka and Okajima both made Opening Day rosters, though only Okajima pitched in his first game on Opening Day

Here's a question:

How much of a heads-up are we going to get? Are they going to tell us a few days in advance, or just call him up a few hours before a game?

On the one hand it would be cool to know in advance so I could buy a ticket, but I'm thinking that might be exactly what they want to avoid. Maybe they don't want his debut to be a big production.

I'm guessing we'll get a heads-up. I would imagine we'll know tomorrow if he's coming Friday or Sunday night if Monday.

I just saw an interview on ESPN.com where they were talking to Bryant about starting the season in AAA. They asked him if he had any hard feelings, and he said he didn't want to talk about it. What's up with that?

Just reading between the lines and spitballing here, but I don't think he wanted to talk about it.

That interview was from the day or two after he got sent to minor league camp. You could charitably interpret it as him just not wanting to talk to the media about his personal feelings, more likely he was frustrated by getting sent down and didn't want to fake an answer. I don't think it's anything in particular to be upset or draw conclusions from.

My interpretation is he had hard feelings but did not want to talk about them to the media.

If he hits dongs the Cubs will eventually offer an extension even Boras can't say no to.

The Cubs could wait until Friday morning before electing to promote Bryant, who then would not be eligible for free agency until after the 2012 season.

Man I do NOT understand baseball rules at all.....

If we now have a time machine can't we just go back to 2003 and fix everything.

Unfortunately, we already did. Sort of. Theo went back and undid our 2003 World Series championship to set force the chain of events that would allow him to come here and piddle with the farm system when he was done in Boston.

Good news, you guys. Kris Bryant's defense and baserunning are just days away from being major league ready.

Since he has 2 errors already that's not really true.

Since he will be called up very soon regardless that is true.
