That list is two international signees, a pitcher, and Varitek buying out a year of FA after he had 4 years of service time, none seem all that applicable to Bryant's situation. Even with Rizzo the Cubs were lucky because his health background helped serve as an incentive to sign, but I don't see any indicator that Bryant has any plans to do something similar. He's healthy and insanely productive, he comes from at least a middle class family, and he's already banked nearly 7 million bucks as a pro, he's basically the poster child of someone who should pursue FA as early as possible.

Bryant said he'll test right shoulder by throwing from 90 feet today. looks forward to playing the outfield at some point.

I figured taking a random blog post at face value was a bit of a gamble.

Isn't the whole Bryant thing a false dilemma? You can both start Bryant April 5th AND get your 7th year of control.

He just needs to be optioned to the minors for a total of 21 days in any one of the next 5 years. Get the days in one year when the Cubs are out of the playoff hunt in August. Problem solved.

There's no reason to hurt your team at the start of the year just to get the control. We will have many options later in the contract to get that year. And there's a good chance at some point Bryant will need work in Iowa to get out of a hitting slump, work on D, or to change positions.

There's a fair chance he hits a big slump or something similar and needs time anyway, so there's no reason to hurt your team just to get an extra year of control when you can get it later and not impact the team's chances of making the playoffs.

The MLBPA would flip their [expletive].

It's a false dilemma, but for different reasons. People keep trying to make it about owners saving money, and while that is a side effect given how compensation is tied to service time, it's still about years of control(and specifically, prime years of control) more than money. If compensation were such that Bryant playing 6 years + 1 FA year cost the same as playing him 6.9 or whatever the decimal is that's actually going to happen, teams would still take the latter option every time.

Plus, today, March 16, 2015, is the furthest the Cubs are going to be from playoff contention for the next 5+ years.

That said, I really don't have any insight on the Cubs' Cactus League third baseman, Kris Bryant.

we're off to a good start

I'm sorry, but I just don't recall ever hearing of ... Derrek Lee or Mark Grace missing games because of shoulder fatigue. That doesn't mean they didn't feel it, but they just didn't take games off because of it.

You don't recall hearing first basemen having shoulder fatigue? Stunner.

Bryant needs to be out there every day because if you can't field your position you will eventually be a DH, and with no DH in the National League, where does that leave the Cubs?

Thanks, Roast.

New manager Joe Madden, with a pretty good club at least on paper, has a bright future, but I believe a lot is attached to how well Kris Bryant can succeed.

very nice
