Why you would find that anything but awesome is beyond me.

seriously

It doesn't bother me; it's just not what I was expecting at all.

Is it more or less weird knowing the entire staff dressed like that?

I don't even know anymore.

i'm pretty amused by your seemingly legitimate concern over maddon's mental health. it's like you are permanently scarred by the experience of sweet lou's drift into mild dementia

Probably, though I really had an image of Maddon as fixed gear bike-riding old hippie, like he was Alex P. Keaton's dad or something. I'm not really sure why, but I wasn't expecting some rip-snortin', old man lunatic to come roaring up in an RV.

Just got back from Arizona, saw three games and won all three. Kris Bryant only played the Saturday game I attended but he looked stunning not only on his 2 HR's but looked good at 3rd too. I know it wasn't a large sample size.

Some thoughts

The Sox stadium is way the [expletive] out there in Glendale, they say the game was sold out, so I found decent seats on stub hub for $2 under face value night before game.

The Portillos by Sloan Park tastes just as good as any Portillos in Chicagoland.

Yeah, but he's sharp as tack mentally. I love listening to him talk to Len and JD and reading what he has to say about baseball. His explanation of why he would sometimes hit the pitcher 8th was outstanding and changed my opinion. He really knows baseball strategy. He's impressive.

He also talked about managing in the minor and trying out things because "nobody was watching" to find out what works and what doesn't. He's the anti-Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg hated managing in the minors.

I [expletive] love that Sandberg ended up getting his managing gig where he did. They are just so perfectly bad.

Oh, ultimately I don't care if he eats rocks and marries an aardvark; I know he knows what he's doing baseball-wise. I just had a completely different expectation personality-wise.

Seriously? The guy's an outspoken Republican and former frat boy. He's certainly an original thinker but "hippie" could hardly seem less apt.

I don't how many times I can flat out say "I didn't pay much attention to the Rays" before it sinks in. I literally remember seeing one profile on him over the years and it was mostly about him riding his bike to the stadium.

It's just so weird how excited you were when he got hired then. I don't mean that there's anything wrong with it, but unless I'm remembering wrong, you seemed super amped about it. Like it seemed like you had to know a good amount on him. It was like the manager version of your Cespedes/Abreu/Donaldson fixations.

Because I knew of his reputation as a good/progressive/whatever manager (and arguments for him being the best in the game) and what the Rays had done during his time there in the broad sense. I just knew next to nothing about anyone on those teams as a person. For all I know Evan Longoria is some kind of jungle cat in human clothes who can fly. With Maddon all I knew was "old guy with hipster-ish glasses who is smart at baseball and rides a bike."

I believe he specifically said something to the effect of "on the field, at the park, or in baseball" so as to distinguish it from the real world.

He was talking about how guys have to earn their playing time.

i knew what he was talking about...i don't recall him making that distinction and even so, it doesn't appear to be misaligned with his actual views.

EDIT - he says "even" when it comes to baseball

“I like the varsity in the stadium,” Maddon said. “The varsity has earned the right to be in the stadium. The JV’s are trying to get to the varsity field. I like that. I’m a capitalist even when it comes to learning how to become a baseball player. I’m not into socialism or communism.”
