Man, that's....that's just sad.

He really seemed like he'd be a joy to know or even just be around.

One of the greats.

It's sad Ernie and Ron never got to see a WS, both seemed to want the Cubs to succeed above all else along with being genuinely good guys who loved the fans.

He had a pretty tremendous six year stretch from 1955-1960 where he won 2 MVP's and averaged 44 HR, 184 hits, 123 RBI, and a 148 OPS+

Imagine that.. and at SS... good god.

This is undoubtedly terrible news. However, I can't help but feel that Ernie wouldn't want people sitting around moping. He always brought so much joy into people's lives, that I can't think of any better way to commemorate him than by thinking about all the times he made me smile. If I could live just one day as happily as he lived every day, I think I'd have a whole new outlook on life.

If my Mom and Dad wouldn't have fallen in love with Ernie as kids, they probably wouldn't have raised me as a Cubs fan. There certainly wasn't much else of a reason to watch the Cubs back then. This sucks. RIP Ernie.

I'm pretty positive he was the first SS to hit 40 HR in a season.
