Also, if they just sign Gomes after this and add no other OF it tells me they r near 100% certain Bryant is starting in LF once he comes up.

I don't know why anyone would think that. They are 100% certain that Bryant is going to play a position he has never played even though he just spent an entire minor league season at 3B? That doesn't make any sense.

It makes sense if they r trying to win games and maximize value. Valbuena 3B+Bryant LF > Bryant 3B+Coghlan/Gomes platoon

The Cubs aren't going to be that short-sighted with their top prospect. If Bryant can play 3B, which they seem to think he can, he is much more valuable there than in LF.

Again, it's not just a matter of Bryant's WAR being more valuable at 3B, the question is will the net value of Bryant at 3B + whoever in LF be more than that of Valbuena at 3B and Bryant in LF. Unless we acquire someone better than Jonny Gomes, the answer to that question looks to be no.

It's left field. You don't need experience to play it.

You do need some to play it competently.

it's kyle. he doesn't actually understand baseball remember?

Jaxon for an overpaid OF sure makes a good bit of sense now. Bourn, Maybin, Crawford, etc.

I'm just a known idiot, but I am aware that this crazy thing called "Spring Training" exists.

"Hey Kris, go spend twenty minutes tracking down fly balls" on some high-sunned March morning.

Boom, he now can handle left field.

Maybin is an easy choice for me of those 3. Though Bourn's leadoffiness does intrigue me.

this post just makes me want a 20 minute video of you trying to catch fly balls on a sunny day.

I just can't imagine spending all that coin on Lester and going to war with coghlan-alcantara-Soler as the of (even with Bryant potentially on the way). Something bigger has to be in the works.

Theo mentioned at the Lester press conference that they're after a LH OF, and that jives with the winter meetings rumors that they're after another big bat. There isn't much in the way of left handed power out there, but that's not a huge obstacle given the rest of the lineup.

Free space on the 40 man.

Bryant played some CF in college, I think he can sniff LF - or be passable.

There is still time for movement on the roster before camp breaks.

The sky is not falling.

Can't wait to see what moves are next.

I'm not a professional athlete who played outfield in college two years ago.

And by "garbage", obviously gscool means "the most productive OF on the roster last year".

Not to say his production can't be replaced, and nobody's really bemoaning the loss, but he was productive last year.

Soler had to outproduce Ruggiano's 0.4 even if he had 1/3 the time.

Wait, didn't Coghlan outproduce him as well?

Ruggiano: 0.4 fWAR

Soler: 0.7 fWAR

Coghlan: 2.2 fWAR

I actually still like Crawford quite a bit. The first two years in Boston were absolute trash, but he's been pretty solidly above-average in his part time role in LA. He doesn't strike out much, still plays very good defense, can still steal bases pretty efficiently... Given the way our roster is shaking out with the big power, big strikeout guys it's not a bad idea to get a few guys with different skillsets.

And with the reports of the Kemp trade maybe falling apart, the Dodgers may be inclined to eat a tiny bit more cash to move him.

Maybin isn't a good hitter, though.

Basically, it means the end of the off season is not here, and things are still yet to happen. My apologies for irritating anyone who was irritated.
