Some concerns about Gase?

There has been speculation that the job was Tomsula's to lose from the beginning. Plenty of us have wondered how much of a process there was given that the guy speculated to be getting the job all the way back in November ended up getting it. We will probably never know for certain what exactly went down, but rumors are starting to circulate.

Buzz around Mobile. Adam Gase screwed up the 49ers HC job in the last interview. He had it locked up before final meeting

Matt Maiocco was asked about Gase as a potential offensive coordinator, and he reiterated that he was under the impression things did not go down very well. Earlier in the day, friend of the site Melissa Jacobs, wrote at TheFootballGirl.com that she had heard rumblings he had let recent success go to his head, and come off as cocky and entitled.

Yeah there are definitely some red flags around Gase:

-Age (not a big deal but its something I've heard come up repeatedly)

-Peyton Manning effect (only experience in a big time coordinator role was with him at QB)

-The fact that he went from big time HC candidate to still unemployed with only a couple coordinator positions still open

-The fact that the Broncos showed little interest in keeping him on board after firing Fox

-The rumors that the Broncos were actually pretty unhappy with the entire coaching staff under Fox

I would still prefer him over the other names mentioned at this point.

I don't like a whole lot Fox as a coach, but now I see why you hire a guy like him. It's looking like the Bears will be getting 2 previously hot head coaching candidates as coordinators, and a huge part of that is because of the pull and respect that a guy like Fox has around the league.

Hopefully, this creates a scenario where Fox does well for 3-4 years and the next coach is already on the staff. Though, I doubt it would be Gase if the Bears are successful because he'll get a HC job before then.

I've had this thought and pseudo-concern, but when you think about it, is there much of a successful history of "having the next head coach on staff"? Belichick wasn't on the Patriots staff before he took the job. Tomlin wasn't on Pittsburgh's staff. Jason Garrett is about the only coach in waiting situation that I am aware of and is he all that successful? Jim Caldwell did it, but didn't last.

That's very true. Belichick also didn't really succeed at the Jets (he had been at the Patriots in 1996, prior to taking HC job after leaving NY).

iirc, the Jets named Belichick their coach and he spurned them for the open NE job.

So I guess I'm OK with Gase. Curious to see what happens with the player side of things now that the coaching staff is mostly settled.

There's a few examples of guys that were on the coaching staff of a team before leaving for some other job, and coming back to that team as HC eventually. Tom Coughlin and Mike Shanahan both did that, but it's not exactly what you're talking about.

Yeah, if anything there is a history of guys circling back with a team where they had underling success. Kubiak back at Denver, Belichick spent one year with New England. McCarthy spent one year with GB then 5-6 elsewhere before returning. That speaks more to the importance of having a coach who can work with a number of quality assistants, and be able to identify and recruit replacements for the guys that leave.

Keep the offensive skill players, move Long to LT, Bushrod to RT.

He was with the Jets, promoted as an internal candidate when Parcells left, then bolted a day later.

A Fox/Gase/Fangio regime is awfully difficult to complain about.

Kyle Long just tweeted that Gase is the guy

Kyle @Ky1eLong

So yea not the sexiest staff ever but certainly one where you're not running much (or any) risk of incompetence.

I think you can add one more red flag. Why did Fox take this long to add Gase to his stable of coaches? It seems like all of the HC jobs were sealed up last week, so I can't imagine it was out of respect for Gase's desire to land a HC job.
