Latest NFL Draft Tek - does not account for Gregory testing positive for Mary Jane (it was posted yesterday morning) - has Bears taking:

1. Cooper

2. Jordan Phillips (DT - Oklahoma)

3. Chris Hackett (FS - TCU)

4. Byron Jones (CB - UConn)

5. Cedric Reed (OLB - Texas)

6. BJ Dubose (DE - L'ville)

At this point I 'd like to see them do something else with 5 and 6, preferably at OT and C, but there isn't much talent there in this draft. I'd also prefer looking for a CB earlier than Round 4. I like Alex Carter from Stanford, for example, in Round 2. That frees you up to go FS in Round 3 (Holliman from L'ville) and DT in Round 4 (Raisin's boy, Ellis McCarthy) .

Considering all of the needs they still have, I think there is still a shot they move down in the 1st Round (New Orleans at 13? Carolina at 25? Baltimore at 26?), grab Shelton (13), Brown or Goldman (25-26) and add a second 2nd Round pick.

They have enough needs they can't get tunnel vision and say "get a CB before round 4". Just grab the best value/fit each round at any position, even if you double up.

That assumes that all positional talent (in terms of where they are selected) is equal. I don't think that is the case.

What like don't grab a G at number 7? That's why I specifically said value and fit instead of saying BPA.

Anyone else think that we should just draft Brandon Scherff at #7 if he's available? Guy is going to be a 10x Pro-Bowler.

I would not object.

OK. For a minute, I think I'm crazy because our D is so bad, but the OL really isn't that great right now. Long is obviously a stud, but Mills is garbage and the left side & center are old. Eventually (or even this year), you could have tackles of Long and Scherff or just leave Long as a dominant G and have Scherff as RT this year and LT of the future.

I thought Scherff is questionable as a LT. Isn't he a RT or G?

Is it kinda crazy of me to think that, while it would be a non-traditional way to build a line, that it might be a good idea to build a line inside-out? Be bad-ass up the middle to make sure you don't get pressure in the qb's face and be able to run inside. Then work on the edges after that.

Is that crazy?

And what the Bears had been gunning for under Kromer/Trestman

John fox says Cutler will have to earn the starting QB job in an open competition

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/27/john-fox-cutler-will-have-to-earn-the-job-in-an-open-competition/

Bears coach John Fox says Cutler will have to beat out Jimmy Clausen and David Fales if he’s going to be the starter because everyone on the roster will get an equal chance to earn the starting job.

“It’s all an open competition,” Fox said, via CSNChicago.com. “Obviously you’ve got to start somewhere and my experience in football, really in anything, it’s not where you start a competition; it’s where you finish it. But we’ve got to start the race with some kind of lineup. We have not discussed that in depth. We have not presented it to our players yet. I kind of have it in my brain and then they compete.”

I don't think that it really means too much, it's still almost certainly Cutler's to lose.

Non-news, imo. Just something Fox probably feels like he needs to say. Something major would have to happen for Cutler to not be the starter.

Yep. Huge, high-paid guards (though they didn't actually invest more than 4th round picks on either in the draft).

Sign Wisnewski and if Slauson comes back to 2013 form, that's a pretty good interior. Saints drafted their LT a few years ago (Terron Armstead) from a small school. I'd love to find a potential OT in the mid rounds, but I don't really see a bunch of options.

plus cutler won't lose to those idiots so it's not even worth worrying about even if it were entirely true

Chicago Bears @ChicagoBears

#Bears have signed CB Alan Ball to a 1-year contract. Ball has played 8 NFL seasons with Cowboys, Texans and Jaguars.

Bears signed CB Alan Ball, formerly of the Jaguars, to a one-year contract.

The National Football Post jumped the gun last week when it reported Ball signed with the Panthers. They offered him a deal, but Ball took Chicago's. Ball started 22 games for the Jaguars the previous two seasons, but had his 2014 campaign cut short with a bicep injury. He provides much-needed depth for the Bears behind starters Tim Jennings and Kyle Fuller. It's still a position of need.

From what I've been told, don't rule out C Stefen Wisniewski. Once again would be a 1 year deal due to health concerns. #Bears

I'd go Beasley in that scenario

The Bears are taking a look at Jacquizz Rodgers. Seems like a good fit if the price is right.

I'd like to draft a RB in what's supposed to be a good RB draft. That said I'd assume this would be a minimum contract deal that can be walked away from.

It would be nice to have a competent return man.

That Mariani dude looked pretty good last year. Not sure he serves any other purpose other than returning kicks, however. Given the need to improve at a lot of positions on defense, I'm not sure having a specialty player who can only return kicks will be in the best interest of the team.
