Why not?

I don't expect that we'll actually get him, but I wouldn't be surprised if we are involved in the bidding. If nothing else, it's just good business to drive the prices up for everybody else.

Do you think Scherzer is going to get about the same contract Price will get next offseason? If so, I'd rather roll the dice on the current rotation next season and prepare to go hard after Price next year.

The chances of finding a solid #3-4 type starter from Jackson/Wood/Wade/Turner/Dubront/Straily/Beeler/Jokisch/CJ Edwards are at least decent I would think. If you pair that guy with Lester, Arrieta, Hammel and Hendricks we are looking pretty good.

Passing up what is available now in favor of what might be available later probably isn't the best strategy, but I'm confident that this is what is going to happen. I think the Cubs will pursue and sign Price next offseason.

And I can't say why, but I'm just not enamored with Scherzer as a long term option as much.

This may be a flawed argument that I haven't thought through, but I think one argument for waiting is that you don't want to put all your chips in now when there's still some uncertainty on the youngsters. As you gain clarity on the youngsters, you'll get a better grasp of whether or not spending big on that 2nd big ticket arm is the right move, or maybe you end up having other holes you need to fill.

I'm actually okay with Scherzer "long run" (I mean, can anyone really be okay betting on anyone's "Year 7" right now), but I'm just leery of two 6-7 year pitching mega-contracts in one off-season, even if we can afford it and have the young talent base to cover things. Wouldn't be ... angry if that happened.

Doesn't Scherzer have quite a few less innings on his arm for someone his age as he's only been a starter for about 5 years?

He's always been a starter he just came up his first year in the bullpen initially like lots of pitching prospects do I believe. But he doesn't have many innings on the arm because, and this is just my armchair analysis looking at his numbers, he's always been a strikeout guy who also never had elite command coming up (but it was fair enough), so I imagine his pitch counts would reach higher numbers quicker than someone who works quickly and racks up innings. Probably explains a little bit why his early IP look low.

I don't buy the hypothetical mileage thing as much as many when discussing player. 30 years old is 30 years old and not pitching innings doesn't slow down the aging process.

I'd be willing to bet that Lester ages a lot better than Scherzer. Scherzer's repertoire strikes me as a guy who requires huge K rates and high velocity.

Exactly what Verlander was and look at him now.

At least he has Kate.

at $200M, I don't see much of a market for Scherzer at all.

I could see the Blue Jays being a "mystery team" that goes there for him

Perhaps. I just don't see many big-market clubs jumping on him.

Boston - already addressed most pitching needs

Dodgers - have all the pitchers

Cubs - highly unlikely

Yankees - maybe?

Blue Jays - maybe?

Angels - unlikely

The Dodgers 5th starter is Zach Lee so they could use a SP, though I do doubt that they'll spend the big bucks needed to get him.

The Nationals have been linked to Scherzer, could see them trading one of Zimmermann or Fister and signing Scherzer.

The Cardinals could be on the periphery if they fell in love with him.

The Tigers and Yankees seem likely to drive up the bidding though, both should want and need him and have little in the way of payroll limits.

Don't you think if the Tigers wanted to keep him they would have already? My guess is that he'll end up somewhere in the AL East.
