Week 12: Bears (4-6) vs. LSB (2-8) Noon FOX/780

Maybe the meatballs who scream all day long about Cutler not taking care of the ball can give the guys credit for taking a couple sacks when he could have forced it, and executing passes that could only have been caught by the receivers in an effing rainstorm.

Screw it. The team gets to play a meaningful T'sgiving game Thursday. I'm glad for it

How the hell is it meatbally to complain about Cutler's constantly demonstrated inability to take care of the ball?

This game proves the bears aren't completely terrible.

They aren't. But the Bucs are. The Jets are. The Vikings are. The Falcons are. That's 4/5 of the Bears wins. Only one of those terrible teams are left on the schedule. They haven't proven they can beat a team with a good QB. Hell, they couldn't beat Manuel or Tannehill.

I will admit though, it still feels like this team is 1 performance away from putting it all together. Cutler has certainly gotten hot before. Of course the defense will again fall apart.

It wasn't the second best offense in the league last year. It was very good, but not THAT good.

Sorry I meant second best in terms of points scored. In most other metrics they were more like 5th or 6th best.

It's not, but those same guys yell about 'living to fight another play" and blahblah, and he goes out and does that, and instead of "good job being smart" it's "look how inaccurate and poor he is"

We've got a great shot at mediocrity.

Definitely competing within the division

This is the 3rd time this season the Bears have been up by 8 while holding on against a (really) bad team. Jets, Vikings, Bucs.

And it happened a 4th time against a decent team (San Francisco)

Has there been any Stafford backlash in Detroit? Guy's been [expletive] all year. Goes to show you that in most towns (not Chicago), winning games is QB immunity.

I assume he's getting a pass because of the new system and probably the Megatron injury.

They said during the game today Stafford has never beaten a team on the road that went on to finish the year with a winning record. That seems impossible

Well, he's a quarterback and not an entire team, so he's never beaten anyone. But it does seem odd if he'd never been on a team that had done that.

Yup...he has beaten teams that went on to finish 8-8 on the road 4 times though (2013 Bears, 2013 Cowboys, 2011 Cowboys, 2011 Broncos)

Detroit hasn't scored more than 24 points since the season opener. They've scored 15 in the last 2 weeks. Of course, today was the first time they gave up more than 23. All the Bears wins have been ugly, and this one is going to have to be if they are going to win.

The offense desperately needs to get it's [expletive] together. The OL has looked wretched, but man, it's depressing watching Cutler. He's not the disaster the meatballs say he is, and he kept the critical turnovers in check today, but he's just been looking...off. I really hope we're not seeing him finally breaking down from the beatings he's taken over the years. We've gotta see Big Play Cutler if they want to have a chance.

He threw for 330 yards and 3 TDs last week against a team that just made Aaron Rodgers look human. I really don't know why you're pulling a really hard Derwood-troll lately.

He isn't the nightmare the meatballs scream for, but he's been "off" way too often this season. I know you're acting like that Vikings win was one of the greatest in Bears' history, but besides his usual issues he's having more and more games where he just doesn't have much, if anything at all. It's worrisome. I love Cutler, but I want to see awesome Cutler more consistently. The Bears need to to have any kind of a chance.

This isn't what he's addressing. Cutler has never been great at the short to mid throws rhythm throws and he's been even worse this year. It's the short slants to receivers, the tight end screens (ugh), and dump offs to Forte. Those are plays you *need* to maintain consistent drives because in the 2014 NFL they've all but replaced the running game as a bread and butter play. Cutler has been really bad at either 1. Completing them or 2. Giving players a chance to make a move and get upfield when they're completed.

His deep ball and his upper mid range passes have remained fairly strong, that's where Jeffery and Bennett have made plays this year. But the undependable running game and short passing game is why, in my opinion, the offense has been especially disjointed this year.

Posted
Right. The offensive approach has been baffling to me this year because it seems like Trestman is keeping them away from Cutler's strongest abilities far too often and instead sticking to a much more conservative offense, and they've paid the price for it. It seems like they essentially just want to plant him in the pocket and play a midfield game most of the time. Cutler is talented enough that his numbers still look good, but there's been a dearth of the big wow moments that he's capable of and that we've seemingly seen more of in the past. I don't know if Trestman just doesn't trust him or what, but he seems reined him and it has resulted in, like you said, some very disjointed results.

Buffalo- Loss

SF- terrible 1st half

NYJets- mediocre on offense, survived bad QB on D

Packers- embarrassing loss

Panthers- no defense, turnovers on O

Falcons- decent game all around

Dolphins- bad loss

Patriots- embarrassing loss

Packers- embarrassing loss

Vikings- moved the ball, barely scored enough points

Bucs- only scored enough points thanks to bad opponent turnovers

This team has played 1 full game that was even on par with what an 8-8 team did last year. I don't have much hope for this season to end strongly. This offense just isn't good enough.

I guess I don't understand why. Line blocking a little worse? Yeah. Jeffery with a step down? Yup. Marshall having a down year? Yup. But those can't account for the 2nd best offense in the league turning into somewhere in the late teens. Is it on Cutler? Trestmans play calling? Or a combo of a lot of things. It's rather perplexing.

The league has figured out Trestman's offense and Trestman doesn't know how or have a counter move.

Maybe to some degree. But Trestman/Cutler have neutered the offense. Very few passes downfield, everything is screens, short routes and checkdowns. Maybe that's his "adjustment" to other teams figuring out the offense, maybe its Trestman no longer trusting in Cutler and handcuffing him, who knows.

I wonder how much of it is on the OL. It seems to have regressed pretty badly, largely due to injuries. It's not just impacted the passing game, but it seems like the run has been spottier, too.

I don't know how valid FO's offensive line rankings are but they have the Bears at 10th best run blocking line and 13th best pass blocking line. But I think the only criteria they use for pass blocking is adjusted sack rate which seems really simplified.

Last year they were 20th in run blocking and 5th in pass blocking according to their system.

I have always felt like Cutler goes into a shell when he gets too much pressure in a game where he gets rid of it quickly regardless of whether there is pressure on that play, or if there is pressure goes into a shell and gets sacked when maybe he could have scrambled. He could have just permanently snapped into that mode because a lot of times it seems like he's checking down too early in a play. Just my observation.

You could very well be right. There's so many things that seem wrong with these guys.

They also seem to have used the extra lineman less this year (until yesterday). That would clearly effect blocking results just based in scheme.

I do recall saying that injuries were a clear area that could cause a relapse on the offense this year, though it's definitely only been a partial factor IMO and in no way excuses Trestman this year.
