ETA: Defending Meph was pretty bad. Although hell, I thought he had some good contributions, but I was 15 when I joined the board and probably had far worse opinions back then.

You're 23. Your opinions are probably still pretty bad.

Very possible, but I have some minor credibility in the baseball analytics world, so I'd like to think I'm not a complete idiot about this stuff by now.

Unrelated - remember when people used to defend meph?

And everybody wanted the Cubs to get Khalil Greene?

Was it Meph who had the JR Towles obsession as well?

He argued pretty hard that trading for Jake Peavy was worth two marginal championships. He had all kinds of math about win projections and playoff odds and such.

But, my guess is that the rate of inflation of MLB contracts is higher than National Inflation and the ROI of MLB Franchises is closer to the 7%, maybe even higher than 7% with new TV Deals compared to a fix rate of return.

Those two aspects make deferring a contract really attractive to a baseball franchise.

I didn't think about that, but if you think there might be a tv bubble in baseball you might factor that risk in. Plus the ROI is a little irrelevant unless you plan on selling.

I really liked the Greene idea at the time; I think a lot of other people here did, too. I mean, it's not like it was obvious the guy would end up all but crippled by social anxiety disorder. His value between 2004 and 2007 was sexy as hell. He looked like he'd be a beast if you got him away from San Diego.

Ha! Harold Reynolds was right about Trout and Meph wasn't.

The next page involves a bunch more posters making fun of Trout.

He had committed to playing at ECU :-(

That would have been fun.

(And of course I missed the game last year when Theo and Jed where in this godforsaken town to see Hoffman)
