Haren had an underwhelming 4.02 ERA and 145/36 K/BB ratio in 186 innings this past season for the Dodgers

i despise this offensive environment

Why? You want to get excited about a 4 ERA?

Considering what that would mean for offense, yes, yes I do.

It really is bad. I still can't get over that only 36 players with enough ABs to qualify had an OPS >.800, only 8>.900 and 0>1.000. Starlin Castro had the 48th best OPS in baseball(.777).

Just 5 years ago in 2010 there were 56 players with an OPS >.800, 14>.900, 4>1.000. Castro's .777 OPS from 2014 would have been 70th.

OF Shane Peterson has been claimed off waivers from the Cubs. With his addition, the 40-man roster is at capacity.

I was startled when I looked at the 2003 Red Sox on Baseball Reference. Damon was last in OPS amongst starters at .750, which was an OPS+ of 94! 7 of their 9 starters has an OPS over .820 and 4 with an OPS over .938. There were only 4 hitters in all of baseball last year that had an OPS over .939.

I think a team that put up their numbers in 2014 would win 120 games with average pitching

Don't have to look that far back. Didn't the 08 Cubs have a team OPS of like .800?

Kuroda's returning to Japan. Hurts the Yankees.

Definitely hurts the Yankees, but I wonder if they were anticipating it. They got a great deal with the Prado trade, IMO, getting Eovaldi, and Capuano is fine as a 5th starter. I'm not convinced they are going to dive headfirst into a Shields or Scherzer market, unless the price comes down.

I'm not a huge Shields fan, but it'd be better than standing pat.

I'd much prefer one of the guys in next years class to Shields, assuming that's all we can afford.

On the other hand, what's Zobrist going to cost? One year of him.....I'd think Tampa would find value in Valbuena, would Vogelbach and one of Johnson/Edwards, with LV, be enough?

Next year's team is going to win 100 games on the back of 50 HRs by Bryant, 40 from Soler and 30 by Russell.

This year's team needs the help more.

Be that as it may, we'll be buying at the deadline and I'd much prefer that route to giving Shields 100+ mill at this point.

What about Castillo, Vogelbach and one of CJ/Pierce. Maybe also include Wood so they have someone to eat innings. I want to keep Valbuena.

i think they insist on Baez / Russell as centerpiece; i'd obviously be willing to part with Baez & one of Almora/Johnson/Vogelbach

re Shields, i think i recall seeing his agent wants 5/110...i'll laugh when he inevitably 'settles' for 5/80

Seriously? Baez + (1 of those 3 guys) for 1 year of Ben Zobrist who will be 34 in May???? Are you kidding me? I like Zobrist as much as the next guy, but holy cow, what an overpay.

You do realize you're talking about a top 10 prospect (Baez) and then basically a top 100 prospect or fringy for Zobrist. We got that package for Shark and Hammel.

I don't get it. The odd sentencing or do you think it's a horrible offer?(I don't read comments there)

they can insist on on russell or baez when they have a guy who isn't old/reliant on 2b defense to trade

apparently you are unfamiliar with sneaky's position on javier baez.

No need to add Johnson/Edwards in there. Heck Voggy in it might be too much. I honestly don't see much difference between Valbuena/Zobrist except Zobrist can play OF, but Cubs have Valbuena for 2 more years and he's 4 years younger.

zobrist played almost as much OF as 2B last year. played plenty of SS too. all of them well. and even without that much defensive value he still would've been really valuable.
