Looking at the NL so far this offseason:

Padres - Better

Dodgers - Better

Giants - Worse/Same

Rockies/Diamondbacks - doesn't matter

Cardinals - Better

Cubs - Better

Reds - Same

Pirates - Same

Brewers - Same

Braves - Worse

Mets - Same

Nats - Same

Marlins - Better

Phillies - doesn't matter

If you assume (big assumption in December) the Dodgers, Cardinals and Nats are favorites for the divisions, that leaves the Padres, Cubs, Pirates, Marlins and Giants fighting for WCs. Maybe the Brewers, Reds and Mets with an outside shot. I guess if I wasn't a homer, the Cubs might be closer to that outside shot group.

Just thinking outloud, I expect to be challenged on half of this.

For some reason I've had it in my mind that Venable was a LF/DH type like Quentin. He'd definitely be a good fit, right up there with Parra for good short term options.

This basically means Ross is about to be a Cub. And that Castillo is dealt, as the repercussion.

Or it doesn't, since Castillo is on the Cubs soooo maybe Ross just doesn't deserve a major league job at this point.

This is my response to people who are like "well the padres and red sox are both set at backup catcher so ross must be going to the cubs"

If we're downgrading from Castillo to Ross, I really really really hope we're trading Castillo for something better than a platoon outfielder.

I understand the bar for offensive production at catcher is extremely low, but isn't Castillo essentially a platoon catcher? Career .684 vs RHP and poor defensively (at a time when extra value is being placed on defense/framing at the catcher position).

.684 isn't bad for a catcher overall, let alone just from one side of the plate when the other is much stronger. The position is unbelievably thin everywhere. And he's not bad defensively. He's fine at blocking pitches, calling a game, and even excels at throwing runners out, he's just thought to be terrible at framing pitches. I'm of the opinion that that has some value, but not nearly what's being placed on it currently.

Awesome, I'm pretty excited about our catching situation for the first time in a while.

poor at framing, pretty decent/good defensively otherwise and he's the perfect complement to montero both offensively and in the sense that he'll get montero a good amount of rest which will hopefully/theoretically keep him fresh and more productive.

Catchers OPSd 689 last year. Hitters OPSd 698 vs. RHP

Braves get following players back in the Upton deal:

Max Fried

Jace Peterson

Dustin Peterson

Mallex Smith

So the Padres have acquired:

Justin Upton

Matt Kemp

Will Middlebrooks

Wil Myers

Derek Norris

David Ross

Josh Johnson

Brandon Morrow

And while they've moved a lot of talent in the deal, including some big prospect names (Fried, Turner, etc.), the only full time starter they've given up is Grandal (as far as I can see).

And they've still got to move at least two of Smith, Maybin, Quentin, and Veneble. If they move Kemp to 1B they can move Alonso, not that he's very valuable these days. With Middlebrooks at 3B they can move Solarte. Also lets them move Liriano. They've got two 2B in Gyorko and Spangenberg. They've still got Kennedy, Ross, Despaigne, and Cashner in the rotation.

They've still got some bullets in the chamber to gain more talent, to say the least. This string of moves has been pretty impressive considering I didn't really think much of them or their system prior to these moves.
