He's made some desperation moves the past couple of years. Just like Beane last year, and Theo at the end with Boston. When your window is open, you go all in. Once it closes, who knows when it will be open again (which is why Friedman and Maddon jumped ship in Tampa). But Daniels is just a year removed from putting a 90 win team on the field and his scouting and player development system is still cranking out prospects like Odor, Gallo and Alfaro.

I agree with you, but it's much easier to think of him as dumb because I still can't get over Otsuka/Eaton for Gonzalez/Young

Yeah, that was one of 16 trades he made that year alone. He basically came in and wanted to change the organization from top to bottom and became a baseball GM day trader.

Daniels has made some ridiculously lopsided trades one way or the other. It's not very often both teams came out well.

Elrhino, you make some good points. I don't think Daniels is bad, never said he was. I just don't think he's necessarily as good as people thought he was a couple years ago. He is clearly more than competent, but he's made some really awful moves. My buddy was just acting like Daniels walked on water and was head and shoulders above any other FO guy in the game, which I disagreed with then and still do now.

4/48 for Mccarthy according to Rosenthal

nice value, i expected him to play out the market longer and squeeze $60m out of a team like the now-desperate Giants

I think all the previous injury issues kept him down a bit. He stayed healthy for the first time this past season and added velo. If he found a new workout that fits him, this could be a steal. But I think he maximized what the market would have paid him based on his prior results.

Is there any way Kuroda could be persuaded into a 1 year contract to come here? I know he's 40 and apparently is set on NY/LA or nothing, but he still is getting results. I'd rather give him a big 1 year contract than any sort of "fliers" on a guy like Anderson or signing Shields.

Ervin Santana just signed for 4/54 with the Twins. That gives them Hughes, Santana, Nolasco, Gibson, May, Meyer, plus Milone and rehabbing Pelfrey on the periphery. I'd really like to see if they're interested in trading Gibson.

If we don't want to move prospects yet and are dead set on adding one more FA SP, Im all in on Brett Anderson at this point.

What makes me the most sad is that Cubs FO didn't show interest in McCarthy, even though Theo loves him.

I'm happy we didn't get him at the contract it took

I'm a big Brett Anderson fan. But at this point, I'd probably prefer to try to get a young(er) starter that is arbitration eligible that a poor team soon won't be able to afford. Or a change of scenery type. Another Arrieta type, if you will.

Those guys don't really exist anymore.

I think Anderson would be a good gamble based on our pitching depth. It's unlikely he makes it through a whole season, but we'll have Wada, Turner and hopefully someone like Pierce Johnson ready to step in when needed.

Has there been anything definitive about whether Maeda will / will not get posted?

They said he wouldn't, iirc, but you never know whether to believe them until it's too late for them to post him.

What the [expletive] do you mean "them"?

Meaningless now, but interesting nonetheless

According to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle, the Cubs talked to the Astros earlier this offseason about a trade for catcher Jason Castro.

That was before the Cubs landed Miguel Montero from the Diamondbacks. They're all set now. Castro declined a contract extension last winter and can become a free agent two years from now, so it makes sense that the Astros would be listening to offers. The 27-year-old backstop batted just .222/.286/.366 in 126 games this past season, but he had a tremendous 2013.
