Morse is probably better than Gomes, but I really can't see why you'd want either. The only way it remotely makes sense is if Bryant is playing zero games in the OF next year, and even then you're only signing them up for pinch hitting and extremely rare spot starts since Soler and Ruggiano are both better as right handed corner OF. If you get a RH backup OF, they should be able to play CF, both because we don't currently have one of those(Ruggiano and Sweeney technically could, but not really), and since the incumbent CF(Alcantara) is going to provide more uncertain production.

I suppose you are correct and I am assuming that Bryant isn't playing in the OF next season. I also thought Morse could play CF, but if I am wrong then I see your point.

Still - I'd rather have Morse as a 4th OF'er than either Ruggiano or Sweeney.

In the absence of another major signing or trade, I think Morse hits enough to play every day in LF - I'd certainly put him out there ahead of Coghlan or the like. His careers splits are basically non-existent - he's fine against RHP. As for Bryant, I don't think there's any chance he plays significant OF next season. He may eventually, but the Cubs are going to give him at least next year to prove he can play 3B.

Morse is a career -20 outfielder defensively, which is how he managed to only put up 1.0 fWAR in 480 PAs with a big offensive season. He has his place as a backup outfielder/DH, it's just not on an NL team that already has Soler, Ruggiano, and Bryant on the roster.

dWAR is an utterly fantastical "statistic" to begin with, but Coghlan was even worse last year, and on average over his career. Who's more likely to put up a decent offensive season in 2015 bases on their history - Morse or Coghlan?

I'd love to see the Cubs go out and get an elite LF either by trade or FA, but that's almost certainly not going to happen in 2015. Someone has to play there, and it isn't going to be Bryant. If Morse can be had on a reasonable deal, he's a better option than any in-house alternative or the likes of Gomes. FWIW, he also has an excellent reputation in that "veteran presence" category that Theo keeps talking up.

Correct, Morse and Coghlan are very similar skillsets(horrific defensive OFs with good hit tools, a bit of pop, and inconsistent performance). Ideally we'd trade Coghlan and have a different LH 4th OF/platoon corner OF, be it an internal option like Sweeney, a FA like Aoki, or even a trade for someone like Crawford(who also has some potential to play CF).

I also don't share your certainty that Bryant isn't going to play any OF next year. It'd be terribly easy to use learning the OF as a reason to keep him in Iowa for service time reasons, and with Valbuena being a better temp option than a LF platoon and Russell shortly behind, there's present reasons to do that too. Even if it's not to start it may not take long for Bryant to play himself to LF, so while I don't think getting a top of the line LF is a terrific idea, Morse isn't a great fit for the roster with all the other RH corner OF options.

Unless you're completely sold that 2014 was the new normal, in no way do Morse and Coghlan have "similar hit tools".

I suspect they're interested in a corner OF who plays righty 1B for Rizzo's "rest" days (and DH for interleague). If the Cubs are really focused on cutting down on Ks, Olt is a goner.

The Cubs, who reportedly met with free-agent pitcher Jon Lester on Tuesday, are one of five teams showing legitimate interest in free-agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reported Tuesday, citing a source.

Don't we already have Ryan Sweeney under guaranteed contract to be a mascot?

If they want him as a special assistant to the special assistant of something-something, sure.

Nays saying Jordan Zimmerman is legitimately available now for the right package.

Isn't every player in MLB?

Stanton. But he will be in 4 months.

Rosenthal says the Reds are close to dumping a bunch of guys, including Jay Bruce. If they're willing to trade in the division a deal for Bruce (maybe a buy low based on last season) and one of their starters would certainly be intriguing.

Evaluators report many players eligible for free agency next fall available in trade now: Porcello, Fister, Zimmermann, Latos, Leake, etc.

Really don't have much interest in any of those guys other than Zimmerman. Unless they're being given away

Trade for Chapman and make him a starter

@HardballTalk: Cubs, Dodgers, White Sox in on Miguel Montero http://wp.me/p14QSL-2hYv

Thoughts from Diamondbacks blog. Yes, I would do that trade they are suggesting in a second.

I was just reading that one and noticed it was a couple days old.

I have little interest in Montero, but that trade seems like something I'd enjoy.
