But if they want to take our middling talent... well that might be ok

Trading Baez is fine, hedging the risk in trying to develop 3-4 prospects into an every day lineup is rational, and Baez is a high risk prospect.

Trading Baez for a 31 year old SP with no 5 win seasons to his name would make my eyes bleed.

he's had six RA9-WAR seasons

I'm open to trading him for the right player, but I do feel some people have a too-negative opinion due to recency bias.

if deplorable contact rates throughout the minors are considered part of that recency, then i'm guilty as charged

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer was on MLB Radio today discussing the Cubs offseason plans and the quote that is getting the most attention was:

"We're sort of reluctant to trade bats for arms, as there are more arms available in other ways".

That's not at all surprising, and I think that trading for a SP should definitely be the fallback plan to signing one or more of these FAs.

some guy at psd:

Maddon was on MLB radio today as well and Jim Bowden asked him "do you get the impression from Theo and Jed that you'll be able to play on Scherzer, Lester, Shields and the big boys in free agency and trades maybe with Cole Hamels" to which Maddon replied "Yeah, conversationally with Theo and Jed over the last couple days, it sounds like we're capable and almost willing to do anything, and that's not a conversation I'm used to"

That is such a beautiful thing to see. It's nice to enjoy before they end up 9-29 in 1 run games somehow and Arrieta needs TJS.

Well yeah, it was unreasonable to expect them to dump all 60M available this off season. They've been quite clear they have certain targets they want in 2016 as well. They'll add a piece or two this year and likely do the same thing next year.

@ESPNChiCubs: GM Jed Hoyer says any reports or hints of a Cubs "supercharged offseason" have been "overstated".

At least until that pudding factory starts paying out.

Is that what they're doing with the Loukas rooftops?

No, it's where Tom is crashing until he gets his tax returns back so he can spring for a studio in Woodridge next to the Dominic's so he won't even have to get a car.

"If the right things line up, we could have an active off-season. We're not going to force it."

Those quotes are just posturing by Hoyer to lower the asking price of trade targets and FAs.

thanks, captain obvious.

It must not be obvious to the posters who post every quote from the FO and then discuss how brilliant the FO is for saying that.

Please link to one of those discussions.
