I think this says a lot about what they think of Albert Almora though.

Not how it works.

Forgive me on not knowing a ton about Eddy. How raw is he? Could he be in Wrigley by next year?

Nah, he's not that close. With the varying reports on him, it's hard to peg what level he'll start at. But most seem to think A or High A is a good starting point next year for him.

I wouldn't expect it unless he just rakes at every level they send him to. I think this says a lot about what they think of Albert Almora though.

Not even a tiny bit.

It says literally nothing about Almora. We've signed multiple 16 year old SS to 1+ mill deals this offseason too. And we've got as good of a situation there as anyone in baseball. You sign TALENT. Worry what to do with it when the time comes.

Still want Vladimir Gutierrez

He's first on my "want" list too. Followed by Ruiz and Perez(if he winds up eligible). My hope is the Dodgers spend "Moncada" money on Lazariti and they stay off most of the others.

With the small amount of teams we're actually competing with for these guys, there's going to be some definite bargains to be had.

The Giants don't seem like a team that's going to go on a big spree or anything. They'll get a couple of lower end guys, in my opinion. Especially since it looks like they gave EJM's money to Fox, then couldn't still pay EJM as well.(at his initial price anyway)

The Royals don't seem likely to make a big splash either. The Reds worked out EJM recently, so maybe they're thinking about blowing off next year to go after this class late. But again, the fact they wouldn't jump on EJM at THIS price, tells me they're not major factors either. Outside of the Dodgers, the Blue Jays seem like our biggest competition to me. And they may not even be in max penalty range yet, meaning there's a chance they're not competition at all.

It's an absolute buyers market. Tons of players and not many true suitors. The key is going to wind up being how many of these guys do actually wind up eligible. But it's pointing towards bunches of them. Which gives us such a great opportunity to coat our system and do it cheaper than it'd cost at pretty much any other time.

If there's any negative at all in any of this, it'd be that there's not that much pitching out there. Which is our biggest system need. But talent is talent and seeing us swoop in on EJM like this(no matter the end result upside honestly) tells me we'll be very active in bargain hunting here all year long.

Well this is a pleasant surprise.

FWIW, I know the opinions on Martinez have varied a bit across publications, but Law is very high on EJM in his writeup of the signing.

No kidding. Wow. Law said he had the talent to be a potential 1.1 pick in 2016.

Yeah, I was pleased with this signing as is, but his piece added a new element of excitement for me.

Pretty nice that, in advance of a draft where the Cubs will be picking late in the first or not at all, they've already added a potential impact talent to the system.

no, it says nothing about that.

Wow. Just wow. I ran into Jason McLeod at the Cubs/Giants game in SF and shook his hand thanking him for compiling all this great, young talent. Looks like I'm going to have to shake it again!

Martinez has a quick and compact power stroke. He's shown the ability to hit home runs to all fields and work the counts. He's speedy out of the box and shows base-stealing potential. Described as "hard-nosed," Martinez is aggressive and not afraid to take an extra-base.

Martinez has shown good instincts on defense and the ability to cover the gaps in the outfield. Those skills combined with a playable and accurate arm make scouts believe he will stay in center field and could be in the big leagues in after a couple of seasons in the Minor Leagues.

MLB.com has EJM as their 4th best IFA behind Alvarez, Gutierrez and Diaz. But this was posted a couple weeks ago on page 14...

Comment From Wrenzie

Who has more ceiling between Yusniel Diaz or Eddy Julio Martinez?

Kiley McDaniel: Martinez. I have Eddy (20 years old) as a 65 runner with a 55 arm and 50 raw power that profiles as an everyday CF that could be above average depending on if the bat is a 45 or a 55. I have Yusniel (19) as a 60 runner with a 55 arm and 40 raw power that can be an everyday guy if he hits enough (50 or 55).

Previous posters have alluded to Law's love of EJM. Here's what he had to say...

His swing is very fluid and simple with excellent hip rotation, and despite a minimal stride, the right-handed hitter makes loud contact to all fields, with easy power from left field over to right-center. I did not get to see him play in a game, so what I know of the rest of his abilities -- such as his potential to play above-average center field -- comes from scouts who have seen him. Based on that, the BP I saw and his very live body, I think he's worth well more than the $3 million the Cubs reportedly will pay him. In fact, I think he's much closer to the $10 million or so that pre-July 2 reports had him getting from the Dodgers. If he were in the Rule 4 draft class for next year, we'd be talking about him as the potential No. 1 overall pick, so the Cubs getting him for $3 million is a relative steal.

I'm excited by the signing, but I only put so much credence into Law's report. He tends to form an opinion and then double down on it when there is any disagreement. The consensus between Law, Kiley and Badler is that EJM is a very solid player, would certainly be a first round pick in the draft, but not quite at the very top.

That's still a great player to have in the system; a bargain at $3M and a decent deal at the penalized $6M we'll end up paying.

Let's hope they keep going. I want all the nice things.

There's just good vibes about this signing because wtf can you really get for $3 million dollars on the open market? Beats signing Cokes and Sorianos to suck for the ML team. ...

It's $6, not $3 cost to Cubs. Agree with spirit of post, though.

This.

Nice to get a 1st round talent in a draft when they'll be picking late, and keep 'em coming, Tom. This is an historic influx of talent and the Cubs timed this (or lucked into this) perfectly. Pony up.

In typical IFA fashion, the Giants GM still thinks they've got a shot with EJM. I've got him as signed and I'm not changing it until we hear otherwise.

Lol. International free agency is still a mess.
