Week 8: Bears (3-4) @ Patriots (5-2) Noon Fox/780

Posted

I guess I'll keep creating these threads for this [expletive] show team. Bears 6.5 point dogs

Last time the Bears and Pats played this happened:

Bears lose 36-7 in the snow at Soldier Field. That was the year they went to the NFC Title game and were a good team.

The time before that, in 2006, the Sex Cannon was launched and Asante Samuel was the proud recipient. Also this happened:

Bears lose 17-13. That was the year they went to the Super Bowl and were a really good team.

The time before that, in 2002, the Bears coming off a division title hosted the Super Bowl Champion Patriots in Champaign. The Bears were in the middle of their fade from 2-0 to 4-12 so it was somewhat surprising when they built up a 27-6 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. But Tom Brady being Tom Brady, they went on a 27-3 run to win.

Of course the Bears will always hold the trump card because:

I don't usually pick games, because I'm terrible at it...and I still won't pick a score. But everyone will pick the Bears to lose this, so I definitely think they're gonna win it. Nobody can figure out this team, and this is gonna be another one of those we're gonna be scratching our heads wondering why we can beat this team and not the stupid Dolphins.

If it wasn't the Patriots I'd be with you. I know the Patriots are not nearly as invincible as past years but I just think Belichick will coach circles around Trestman in this game and will find a way to shut down Jeffery and Marshall and limit Forte. Also if they set Revis on Marshall, there's no doubt in my mind that Jay will try to force a couple his way.

Yeah, quintessential Bears have no chance game.

I'm going back and forth. Bears are so unpredictable and the Pats only best the Jets by 2. But it's hard to not be so down on the Bears. They also get extra time to prepare for us.

We'll rely on Jay in two ways- to play well obviously, but also to get Marshall together emotionally. Hopefully they have a nice dinner for two tonight and everyone's all happy and motivated on Tuesday.

In the end Pats are gonna put up some points. Will it be a shoutout or crushing defeat?

Also do we do something with Mills this week?

Pats by 14+. I know the Bears have won games they weren't supposed to after being left for dead. None of those were against the greatest Coach/QB combo in league history.

This will be the penultimate blow to the 2014 season with the Packers finishing the job after the bye. What a disaster.

The Dolphins are actually a good game to have prior to the Patriots. Kinda like Tannehill, old Brady sucks at throwing the ball over 20 yards. The Dolphins, I guess, had the threat of throwing it deep because they do have Mike Wallace. But I don't believe they ever ran him on a deep route over 18-20 yards yesterday. The Patriots will run a guy or 2 down the field, but pretty much since the Randy Moss days, they've been doing that to open up the underneath stuff for an easy throw, catch and run. Almost 82% of their completions have gone to TEs, RBs, or Edelman who is a WR, but hasn't had a play over 20 yards since having a 44-yard catch in both Weeks 1 and 2.

So, if the Bears LBs play with their backs turned again, they'll get lit up again. Oh and somebody other than Ratliff probably is going to have to show up to play on the D-line.

At least Brady won't be running read-option. The Bears have no idea how to defend it.

I missed a lot of yesterday's game but that 4th and 1 read option in the third was painful. Peyton Manning could have converted that play.

Best part was before that play the announcers mentioned that Tannehill was running early, and I said to myself (outloud) "and he's going to do it now". Easiest play call ever. I think it was Houston that crashed down. I never understood why DEs did this on a play to the opposite side. Only 3 things can happen if you're left DE and the play goes to the defense's right. 1) someone else makes the tackle, and your help isn't needed. 2) there's a hole and your help isn't helpful because the RB is already well past the line of scrimmage you are crashing or 3) he cuts back right to where you are, which isn't helpful if you are trying to get to where he is instead of where he is going.

Difference between this apparently un-winnable road game and the earlier ones in San Fran and Atlanta is that the locker room may be imploding and Trestman is on his way to getting fragged. Pats 31 - Bears 13.

That Tannehill run was the most deflating Bears moment I can recall in years. Its not like he's known for that [expletive].

But it's more than one play. Jared Allen has been talking about how much he hates defending the read option:

"I am glad I am on the tail end of this thing," joked Allen, who got his first sack of the season last Sunday against the Falcons' Matt Ryan. "I would hate to have to make a living off the next five years."

"Now, your mindset changes," Allen said. "You are playing laterally more and you are playing slower from the standpoint that now you have to get off the ball knowing you are going to get a pass set. If I get up the field, I could get gashed underneath. So now I have to come off the ball and make sure it is (a) pass.

"Gone are the days when you'd be playing an offense like Mike Martz had and you'd know you were going to get a chance to get after it all game."

There's too much read option being played now to have guys that can't play it. And to announce the media that you can't play it? Every read option team is licking their lips.

Posted
Is there really a team in the NFL that plays the Bears that doesn't already know that they can't stop the read option?

Packers can't stop it either. Packers are actually worse at stopping it.

the 49ers didn't seem to run it all that much in their game against the Bears

Yeah, that was so strange.

This team's dead in the water for a playoff berth. 8-8 or maaaaybe even 9-7 is still doable with the weak second-half schedule.

No NFL quality linebackers. Safeties still terrible. Defensive line and even CBs inconsistent. Exploitable holes in the offensive line. Wide receivers still dinged up. No backup RB.

And honestly, I think Cutler's starting to lose it a bit. I stand by my assessment from earlier in the season: the number of missed throws per game (not bad decisions, but balls not going where he meant for them to go) is starting to creep up this year.

Plus brutal ST coaching and mediocre rest-of-staff coaching.

You probably need 10-6 to get to the Wild Card this year (although the tiebreaker with SF may come in handy). In order to do that, you have to sweep the "easy" games and also go 3-2 in the hard ones (@NE, @GB, @DET, DAL, DET).

About to play Brady and Rodgers, both of whom are more than willing to check down against a LB crew that apparently likes to face the opposite way. Also not good that the defense will be without their best corner.

Unless he or his family is hospitalized, he is being a complete bitch about this. [expletive] him. It's great to go on the radio and slap ass with Tom Waddle when you win, but you lose in horrifying fashion and can't man up to be on the show? [expletive] him. This tells me a lot of what I need to know about his character and leadership. He's laughing all the way to the bank.

Good thing we didn't have the option to franchise him with nearly no downside. Oh wait...
