He's got that bad period of 4-5 years in the middle of his tenure, but that's bookended by equal or greater periods of success. People knock the first few years because he had Bonds and they didn't actually win a WS, but [expletive] them. The guy's a solid GM.

he signed Michael Tucker expressly so that he would lose draft picks, which i think is where a lot of the "lol Sabean" attitude originated; he's probably also guilty of overpaying for midseason fixes at times (Alderson for Freddy Sanchez, Wheeler for Beltran)

we're seeing that absolutely nailing 3 straight first rounders (Lincecum, Bumgarner, Posey) certainly does set a team up pretty well, though, so whoever is responsible for those picks certainly deserves a ton of credit

it's my opinion their window probably closes after this, though

At least we don't have to live in a world where Ned Yost has managed a team to a World Series win.

Instead we live in a world where Sabean has three titles.

Go ahead and crack a bottle and tell us why this is so outrageous.

Pizza is on its way

Why? Their infield is young, and they can apparently conjure league average OFers out of thin air.

mostly the giant forks hanging out of Matt Cain & Tim Lincecum...and does Panda stay?

what's the rotation going to look like the next few years? all their top arms in the minors took pretty big steps back this season

Eh. He'd already won the two. The third doesn't change much.

That fork has been in Lincecum for their last 2 titles. Cain was barely mediocre this year, and was probably pitching through elbow pain. I have no gauge on what Sandoval does as I haven't really paid attention to guys that won't concern the Cubs, but the Giants have shown a willingness to spend money, so I'd expect them to sign a fairly decent sized name this offseason either to bolster the rotation or replace Panda

And I'd bet against the 2014 Giants to win the World Series every [expletive] time

(I realize that statement isn't actually saying much but you get my point)

They're at $127M already next year for 12 players after being at $149M this year. FAs include Peavy, Panda, Romo, Morse and Vogelsong and before arb raises. They will have $42M coming off the books after 2015 though (Lincecum, Hudson, Scutaro and Affeldt).

i don't disagree with either of these points too much, and while they've got MadBum, Posey, Pence as 3 awesome pillars, Belt & Crawford are nice pieces, there's just so little else there beyond that, even at the high minors

Well that's kinda my point (reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated)

Also, just to be pedantic, wouldn't you bet against any team to win the World Series?

These poor souls here thinking that they'll get back next year.

I don't mean to be that guy, but does anyone think the Royals will be "back" next year? You're not escaping Yost's idiocy two seasons in a row and they'll lose their "top pitcher" to free agency.

No chance.

That said, I also didn't expect them to make the wild card let alone the World Series, so who the hell knows.

Yeah this year has clouded the fact that their core group really hasn't met expectations. Obviously Cain was a great find, and maybe the others will step up, but I can see this team winning 70 games next year before them winning 90.

The only thing that did not break right for the Royals this season was Duffy's injury and Bumgarner was awesome and Panik made that play in Game 7.

Actually, even Duffy's and Ventura's injuries earlier in the year looked to be season- or even seasons-ending but were just a couple of missed starts instead.

Almost all of my friends knew this was their shot and are resigned to tthem falling back into 75 win hell.

Butler, Infante, Hosmer, Moustakos and Perez were all worse than expected.

Butler has slid two years in a row, not sure how much bounce back he has in him.

Rumors on sports radio here is they are listening on Gordon, Hosmer, and Moustakas. Would love to get Gordon, but imagine they rightfully have a high value on him.

Mooose tacos isn't very good and hosmer is ok, but i can't imagine they'll get much of a haul for him.

Moustakas has a .260 career BABIP in nearly 2000 PA, .239 in his last 2 years/1000 PAs. Remarkable for a guy with his pop and K rate.

Yeah Gordon is the guy to want.

I still think Hosmer is more like the 2013 version than the 2014 version. The 2013 Hosmer is not bad.

the giants' lineup in 2007 was benjie molina (32), ryan klesko (36), ray durham (35), omar vizquel (40), pedro feliz (32), barry bonds (42), dave roberts (35) and randy winn (33). next-most at bats was rich aurilia (35). they were a bad team that year, with a roster that was very old. it's pretty impressive that they went from that to winning a world series in 3 years. sabean was at fault for letting his position players get so bad and so old in the mid to late 2000s, but he's had a lot of prospects pan out and also brought in a lot of cast-offs who played really well in san fran.
