I said this in another thread but it got lost in the argument about the rebuild...

So, the argument that most use against waiting only 10 days to call a guy up (to get the extra year) is that it would be too obvious what the intentions are and that the players association would be pissed I guess and that this is why teams wait a little longer, like May, to call them up.

That said, when guys have already had service time in the past, it doesn't seem that uncommon to do it right after the the date when they can no longer accrue enough service time in a given season to lose the year (like with Rizzo being called up basically a day or two after his date passed, which also happened to be the "magical" 600 PA barrier IIRC).

These two things seemingly being the case, can't you let him waste some service time this September and still call him up around the same time you would've called him up had you left him in Iowa all year, since teams waste a couple weeks before really calling them up anyway?

And risk that he does well, and has another hot spring and makes it very difficult to justify putting him back in AAA? What for?

if bryant hits .500 with 10 home runs in spring training after hitting like 45 home runs in AA and AAA in 2014, there's already going to be immense pressure for him to start with the (major league) cubs. i don't really see how 2-3 weeks with the big club in september is going to make a huge difference.

I am resolved to not get worked up about callups this time. If it were me, they'd all stay down until late next April. But if the front office wants to bring them up earlier, I'll just take that as a sign that they're confident in their ability to get these guys to agree to favorable contracts.

I thought the discussion was about Javy. Although it still applies to both. However much time any of these guys spend on the big club in 2014, to the extent that that time is productive, the pressure will intensify to have them on the big club. As it stands now, there is very little pressure. The majority still think of these guys as abstract concepts.

Regardless, you probably should not call somebody up unless you are ready for them to stay up.

I think when they're all up and everything clicks (fingers crossed) they'll realize they are all a part of something extremely special and are trying to do something which hasn't been done in over a century, and they'll love every [expletive] minute of it. I think because of this they'll be open to signing long term deals. They'll all be comning up through the same system together striving to win the World Series. How many World Series teams have had an abundance of players on their roster that came up through the ranks at the same time to reach the highest stage? If that happens, that would have to feel pretty [expletive] awesome for them, and I think they won't want to play anywhere else, at least not for a long time.

But that's just my own daydream speculation.

Yes it certainly is.

That's crazier than the "soon Rizzo will be the 3rd or 4th best hitter" stuff

What happens if Javy starts off in Iowa next year and has similar struggles early on? Do we think they will call him up in May with a .600 OPS? Would that even be a good idea? Id like to give Javy a chance to establish some momentum in Chicago. If he performs, let him start next season in the majors. If not, there will be no gnashing of teeth if he is back in Iowa.

He was supposed to be up this summer. He has been killing AAA pitching for a while. Call him up now.

I definitely don't see this out of Baez or Bryant.

If you think he's ready, call him up regardless of how he's hitting next April. If a poor 2 week stretch casts doubt on his MLB readiness then he should probably stay down, but it's extremely unlikely for multiple reasons.

We often forget that we are a major market team, capable of generating major market revenue even when they're awful (which is the reason that nobody took their threats to leave Wrigleyville seriously) and the moment they show signs of life, the fans that stopped showing up flock back. Couple this with a front office dream team, and I'm confident that they can get creative enough to lock up a good chunk of the core for quite some time without relying on discounts, and have money left to continue to fill any holes that appear over time.

This is all make believe, like elves, gremlins and Eskimos.

I don't know about all this kumbaya 'win it for friendship and loyalty' BS, but having a completely renovated clubhouse will go a long ways in getting these guys to stick around.

Baez called up?

Gadi Baez @OMGADI

Congrats to my brother @javy23baez on getting called up! Welcome to the show baby!!

Posted

I want Javy up now, because I have some weird notion that the Cubs could compete next year. Plus, I like the thought of having these guys come up in waves. If for nothing else, the pressure won't be on all 4 of the big 4 at the same time, and they all struggle together.

Javy is the most logical to come up now. No real defensive questions, 1 1/2 spring trainings with the team, doesn't really need work on his defensive position, and has the most minor league ABs of the group, with the most of the group at the highest minor league level. Plus, I think you get his first 200 PA slump out of the way. Of course, at this point, it's probably too late to bring him up this year.

But if I was running the show, ideally I would have had:

Alcantara up in June

Baez up after the AS break

Soler, Sept. callup 2014

Bryant up in early May 2015.

Russell, let his bat dictate, but likely up b/w June-mid July 2015.

Looks like only Brett has noticed.

So, a Twitter acct. claiming to be Javy Baez's brother is saying Baez is getting called up. (See recent RTs). Interesting.

I wonder if Russell gets called up to AAA in place of, or is it far to soon for that?

Would being in AAA affect his ability to be in the AZL?
