I wouldn't say anyone is defending ned colletti or calling him a genius, but he is the GM of the best team in the NL, so it's hard to say he's doing terrible, awful, fireably bad work at the job he was hired to do. obviously most of the credit goes to the $$$, but whatever stupid, horrible decisions he's made don't seem to be slowing the dodgers down too much.

relatively shocking to hear a non-[expletive] person talk like that less than 5 years after the Hendry era ended.

What makes you think the Dodgers circa 2014 are analogous to the Hendry era Cubs?

jw but how are you feeling about the state of things at this point? I know you were starting to be down on things after the way last offseason went (as was I) with basically nothing happening, but a some positive things have happened since (in terms of development mainly plus the trade).

wasn't there a GM approval poll at one point? whatever happened to those

but for the sake of brevity, Arrieta maybe achieving near-ace status, trading Shark for Addison Russell, every pitcher of note throughout baseball all blowing out their elbows, Rizzo's monster breakout all helped me warm to the viability of the FO's direction, yes

I've been bad about the approval polls, there should've been a GM one for opening day/post-offseason, and I've missed a couple manager polls too I think. The next executive poll is in a couple days for post-deadline.

The #Dodgers are trading RHP Jonathan Martinez to the #Cubs as the player to be named later in the Darwin Barney trade.

Interesting

He doesn't look that bad at all, but he's repeating a level and I have no idea about his stuff.

The super low BB/9 combined with the just ok K/9 and not great H/9 makes me think his stuff is probably just ok if that. I'd think if the stuff is good and he had command like that, he'd give up fewer hits and strike out more guys.

The stuff could be alright. He could have those same totals by pitching in the heart of the zone with good stuff instead of painting the black.

FB, Slider, Change. Chance at first 2 becoming plus. Below average Change. Can hit 94, sits 91-92.

Nothing special, but not a nothing either. Very happy with this as the return on Barney. He was 19 and Opening Day starter in the MWL this year. It's not bad. Not bad at all.

35. Jonathan Martinez, RHP (6’1, 170, 20 years old)

Martinez was one of the Dodgers’ better international signings in the final years of Frank McCourt’s ownership reign. Martinez was signed out of Venezuela and debuted in the Dominican Summer League at age 17. He began 2013 with Great Lakes before getting demoted to Ogden. He was promoted back to Great Lakes and actually pitched better at full-season ball than he did in rookie ball. Martinez has an 88-92 MPH fastball that could tick up as he matures on the mound. He also has a slider that flashes solid-average potential and a changeup that could be at least average once he figures out how to be consistent with it.

He exhibits better-than-average control and command with his pitches. He has a little funk in his delivery that helps him to be deceptive. However, a significant drop in his strikeout rate in 2013 is concerning, especially since his ground ball rate didn’t improve much. He’ll need to figure that out as he advances. He spent most of his time with Great Lakes in 2013 and could either return there to start, with a promotion to Rancho Cucamonga. If not, he could begin with Rancho outright. It’d be a somewhat aggressive assignment for the 20-year-old.

2013 ranking: 49

2014 location: Low-A Great Lakes/High-A Rancho Cucamonga

ETA: mid-2017

Tools Now Future

Fastball 40 45

Slider 45 55

Changeup 30 40

Cmd/Ctrl 45 55

Delivery 45 50

This is from January of this year, but I have no clue to the validity of the site. He was named the Dodger's minor league pitcher of the week last month, FWIW.

Dig me some strike throwers. Here's what some googling turns up on his stuff:

From Baseball Instinct, March 2013:

Despite being a bit on the short side, Martinez has a 93-94 mph fastball that shows plus potential. He also has 2 work in progress pitches; a change up and a slider. Both pitches have average potential. He tends to fade away to the 1st base side at times, but is usually very effective when he plants squarely towards home plate

From mlive.com, April 2014:

“He pitches with his fastball a lot,” Loons pitching coach Bill Simas said. “He has a 2-seem running fastball that he pitches a lot. He will throw a changeup and mix a slider in there. He does know how to change speeds, and he’s better at it now.”

Martinez relies heavy on his fastball, that he said reaches 92-to-94 miles per hour,

Minor league opening day starter isn't that big a deal.

That said, he's an interesting arm and a nice haul for Darwin Barney.

Sounds like he's breathing, yep we won the trade

Yep, that's all I was hoping for.

Sounds like a Derek Johnson guy. Decent FB with ready command. Needs to work on his supplementals. This is the profile for a lot of the Cubs recent draft picks. Get a guy with the best FB available and DJ will teach him the rest.
