My dad is a Mets fan and he's telling me that there is a bunch of talk on the Mets board about the Cubs and Mets working on a deal. I guess the Mets have some pitching prospects but no hitters, and obviously we are in the opposite situation. I guess there are rumors about us sending one of our shortstops (I'm guessing Russell?) to the Mets for Jon Niese. I have no idea who the sources are on this.

Anyone heard anything?

No one in their right mind would give Russell for Niese. Or Baez, or even Alcantara.

The Cubs having a perceived overabundance of shortstops is going to lead of a lot of overzealous speculation from fans of teams who need shortstops.

That's not even somewhat believable.

I don't expect the Cubs to trade one of their elite minor leaguer this season, maybe in the offseason.

And they're certainly not trading Alcantara, Baez or Russell for middling talent just because they're arms. The last three first round picks and the Epstein's quotes following the Samardzija/Hammel trade show how much they value pitching.

After hearing Theo's comments, I have serious doubt we'll trade for pitching. At least not with our elite guys. Spending in FA seems the more likely avenue. For one of our 3 SS from the Mets? With Niese involved? Syndergaard and Montero added in is in line with what I'd think anyway. Due to success ratios of hitters vs pitchers. Still, the Mers likely turn that down and I seriously question we'd even offer it.

i think it shows how confident they are in their abilities to thatch together a starting staff, turn them over to Bosio and then go to sleep. But we're going to need aces if we have any desire to make a run in the playoffs. the good news is that we look like we have one already.

If there was anything, anything at all, it would be all over Twitter. My guess is that it's more the foolish musing of some Mets fan who read too much into all the talk of the Cubs being stacked at SS, and it escalated on some Mets board.

Niese is 27 and under team control through 2017, so I'd maybe move Alcantara for him, but neither Baez nor Russell are possibilities.

Russell for Niese? Seriously? Unless Harvey is involved, no interest, and they are getting nowhere near Russell either.

Add that to the following I've heard today

Alcantara for Piscotty

Castro for Marco Gonzales and Siegfried

Castro for Syndergaard

etc etc.

Apparently because the Cubs have lots of prospects the rest of MLB fandom believes Theo is giving them away for .50 cents on the dollar.

This is what Theo thinks a pitcher is:

EVERYONE STEP RIGHT UP, WE'VE GOT YOUR PROSPECTS, WE'VE GOT YOUR SHORTSTOPS, WE'VE GOT YOUR OUTFIELDERS. EVERYONE'S GOT TO GO, STEP RIGHT UP!

I would have done Castro for Archie Bradley straight up but now I'd want another top 10 pitching type.

We have the ample prospect depth to trade for one or two whenever we need to at this point. I do think we'll sign one of the bigger name FA pitchers this offseason.

No way. I'd want significantly more for Castro.

ETA: Unless you are saying top 10 overall, not organizational. Even then, idk if I would do it.
