Baez 0-for-2 with 2 Ks

Alcantara 0-for-2, pushing his OBP down to .283

Christian Villanueva 0-for-1, coming into the day with a .639 OPS

Vitters is striking out at a rate that we would consider bad if we didn't have so many horrorshow K-rates in our system overshadowing it.

Iowa is depressing.

Soler and Bryant playing so well is the only thing keeping me from thinking Kyle thoughts. Please don't break again, Soler.

Holy hell, Baez has been pitiful.

Baez has done alright in spring training the past couple years (if memory serves) and he was most likely facing AAA caliber pitching there. How does a new level turn him into such a turd?

Spring training quality pitching is complete crap.

In spring training, guys are working on things and don't care who is up.

In AAA, you get crummy veterans who are capable of noticing and executing "Hey, this guy will swing and miss at most breaking balls in the dirt."

Spring training was a bad example to use. It just seems crazy that the "this guy will swing and miss at most breaking balls in the dirt" ability would be so drastically different between AA and AAA. Just seems like there has to be something else in addition to that.

It can't excuse a slump this bad butI understand his back is still bothering him. Apparently it's not bad enough to DL him.

I'd just as soon put him on the DL instead of letting him flail away. Get some rehab abs in ext and start the season all over.

does it really hurt or is it a convenient excuse? I don't trust anyone with injury reports in the Cubs system.

Just curious...source?

Do we need to take a look at Iowa's hitting coach?

Not one of the hitters down there who could even be vaguely considered a prospect is having a good season.

I think at this point the best thing to hope for is that the real Javier Baez was kidnapped during the offseason and this is a lookalike who will only be around until #ptr can save up the ransom money.

I just don't get Baez

Pretty much. There's no superficial reason that explains a .500ish OPS with 37% Ks completely.

Simple narratives are appealing more often than they are right, but it seems to me that this is just the first time in his life he's faced pitching that is both interested in and capable of executing repeated breaking balls in the dirt.

At lower levels, guys are working on pitches and don't really care much about scouting reports. Plus they hang stuff a lot more. At AAA, you are starting to see more of the guys with experience and consistency, even if the actual stuff isn't good enough to come into the zone with against MLB hitting (which doesn't matter against Baez because they don't have to come into the zone).
