There can't even be that many people in the FO left from when Sosa was here, so this [expletive] just smacks of either fear of the meatballs, or outright stupidity.

Sosa was the only good thing this stupid team had for years.

I think Kerry Wood doesn't like Sosa (wasn't he the one who smashed Sammy's boombox?)

I think this is a big part of the problem.

If true, then Kerry needs to get the [expletive] over it like a grownup.

Wood wasn't even there today. If he influences which players the organization maintains ties with this is evenly more poorly run than I thought.

It's probably going to take someone like Ernie, Maddux or Wood speaking up for Sammy to even begin the conversation.

Besides Ernie Banks, Sammy is the only Cub that matters. He brought in hundreds of millions of dollars to the city of Chicago and the Cubs. It's a good damn shame how they are treating him.

Boo Ricketts and boo the Cubs.

I'm still trying to figure out why Dempster was there over guys like Maddux/Wood or heck... even Zambrano. Was Don Kessinger or Rick Reuschel there? I didn't get to watch the game until the 7th inning so I don't know who was all there. I'm sure a couple of these guys declined the invitation or just couldn't make it.

But seriously, Sammy should've been there even if Sammy/Cubs/Ricketts aren't on good terms.

Wood was advertised as one of the attendees, but I guess maybe something else came up. I would imagine that guys like Maddux and Sutcliffe were invited as well. It is too bad they weren't able to get a little better turnout from former players.

Seriously, Ryan Dempster? He was so out of place it was actually awkward seeing him there. I wonder if he almost invited himself to attend.

McGwire has been hitting coach for the Cardinals, Bonds is embraced again by the Giants, and Ryan [expletive] Braun is getting standing ovations in Milwaukee. They couldn't even show one Sosa highlight in the opening bit.

A couple of times I saw Sammy play he'd run out to right field with a glove full of baseballs and throw them into the crowd. People would literally stand up out of their seats as he'd run by. It was a marvelous spectacle and one of the truly awesome things about Cub baseball in that era. [expletive] the Cubs and [expletive] the fans who still think he owes them anything.

Like or not he was the face of the franchise for quite awhile. For every fan that hates him, there are probably 100 fans that were kids in his hey day that love him.

Not too mention that these "kids" are now in their 20s and 30s, which means they (FO) should worry about them as a fan base.

im way more upset about this than i should be, but what kind of [expletive] numbskull doesn't want to welcome oh, only the best player in cubs history, back with open arms. i mean jesus christ

The sentiment is right, but the description is exaggerated.

sad thing is I bet most meatballs are against it.

Boomer Esiason did a hot sports take on the Score this morning saying he agrees with shunning Sammy.

How could they be on any terms at all, aside from Ricketts judging him from afar. Sosa left in 2004 and his contract ended in 2005. Ricketts wasn't even in negotiations to buy the team then.

Unless Sammy banged his wife.

I would...but only in an attempt to McCourt the team out of his control

I hate those segments. It serves no purpose.

Sammy should've been there.

There has to be more to this story that we don't know...right?

I think this. There's gotta be a reason that many ex-players aren't openly campaigning for his return. You can't have so many silent people that were on the inside (ownership and FO obviously gone) be this quiet on the Cubs not inviting back their best player of this generation without having a decent reason for doing so. And if there isn't, well god dammit.

IMO, it's telling that Kerry (by all accounts, a pretty decent fella) still has some sort of grudge towards Sammy after 10 years, whether it's the cork issue, moping about batting 6th, clubhouse differences, or whatever.

I'd like to see Sammy come back eventually, but i'd be really surprised if there wasn't more to the story than we're led to believe. And as mentioned previously, if there isn't, well....sigh.

Which ex-players are you expecting to be campaigning for him? Wood is like the only one of any signifigance from Sosa's time that still has anything to do with the team.

What do you mean more? We know he annoyed a lot of his former teammates. Sandberg doesn't like him, Wood didn't like him, Grace didn't like him. This is all documented. I would not expect former teammates to lobby for the guy. I would expect a rational organization to ignore the lack of campaigning and do what is right.
