Addison Russell and Gleyber Torres are in this week's team photo:

Addison Russell, ss, Cubs: The Cubs struck early and landed the prize of the trade deadline by plucking Russell from the Athletics as part of the package for righties Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. At 20 years old in Double-A, Russell is off to a fine start, already stringing together a seven-game hitting streak that included five multi-hit games. Combine his offensive prowess with his defensive chops and you’ve got one of the best prospects in the game and yet another contender for the shortstop of the future in Wrigley.

Gleyber Torres, ss, Cubs: With a Triple-A lineup that sends Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Jorge Soler up back-to-back-to-back, and Addison Russell and Albert Almora at Double-A, it’s easy to forget that the Cubs signed the No. 1 and No. 2 prospects on the international amateur market last year. Torres, 17, ranked No. 2, and he’s lived up to every expectation so far. He’s hitting .280/.383/.400 as a one of the youngest players in the Rookie-level Arizona League, showing bat speed and a knowledge of the strike zone.

Kris Bryant #1 this week: http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-aug-8/

1. Kris Bryant, 3b, Cubs

Team: Triple-A Iowa (Pacific Coast)

Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .421/.607/.842 (8-for-19), 10 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBIs, 7 BB, 5 SO, 2-for-2 SB

The Scoop: Minor league managers at Double-A and Triple-A were so taken with Bryant that he claimed five categories on our annual Best Tools survey. That includes wins for best batting prospect, best power prospect, best defensive third baseman, best infield arm and most exciting player.

Bryant combines those raw tools with elite production, making him one of the game’s top prospects. He’s tied for the minor league lead with 37 home runs and leads the field outright with a .692 slugging percentage. He ranks second in the minors with 96 RBIs and a .448 on-base percentage—though we might consider the crown his because Athletics outfielder Boog Powell and his .453 OBP are suspended for the rest of the season. (Powell had not reached the necessary 378 plate appearances to qualify for percentage titles at the time of his suspension.)

First time I've seen anything positive about his defense

Boog Powell? Is there a new Boog Powell? Cause the only one I see retired in the 70's

Type Boog Powell into Baseball Reference and you get OG Boog Powell. If the MiLB dude goes by Boog Powell, B-R needs to make it to where there's two selections to choose from after the search. They do not, and the article did not mention the name Herschel, and I didn't want to do extra digging because it was late and I was drunk and didn't give a [expletive].

I would say the main problem is that we are simply recycling nicknames. WTF is that?

i remember people calling dean palmer dizzy in the 90s lol

Holy [expletive] that guy gets on base a lot for having little power.

12. Pierce Johnson, rhp, Cubs

Pierce Johnson

Team: Double-A Tennessee (Southern)

Age: 23

Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 SO,

The Scoop: Johnson, who had hamstring and calf injuries that cost him two months of the season, is fully healthy and performing as expected. The Cubs’ No. 8 prospect is 5-5, 2.48 overall, but has not allowed more than three runs in a start in his past 10 outings and is striking out more than a batter per inning since the all-star break. The lanky Colorado product has a fastball that sits in the 90-94 mph range, touching 96, and a power curve.

Keith Law hates him. :)

Keith Law hates all things Cubs other than Addison Russell. Even when he gives compliments it's sandwiched by two reasons they still might suck.

Doesn't Law have KB 1 overall?

I believe so. He also had Javy at #7 if I remember right. He acknowledges they're good, but still manages to put loads of negative spin on any positives.

Just no.

It's job security to put caveats and doubt in analysis with the attrition rates in baseball. If you hate on everyone you are right most of the time.

Agreed. I will say that Keith Law has a much tougher time in admitting when he was wrong than others, though. He still thought that Paul Goldschmidt was a platoon bat in, like, May of last year. He usually sticks to his original thoughts on players until the evidence is overwhelmingly against those thoughts. But, it's not like he is saying flat-out, "This player won't make it." He is just listing their flaws and what might be their undoing.

I think he still has Buxton #1, but he's high on Bryant, Russell and Soler. He hates almost all of our pitching

Keith had Bryant #1 in his most recent rankings.

Team: high Class A Daytona (Florida State)

Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .407/.467/.889 (11-for-27), 7 R, 5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 3 RBIs, 3 BB, 8 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Hitting just .242 at Daytona entering this Hot Sheet period, Schwarber broke out in a big way this week with eight extra-base hits. The Cubs identified the Indiana standout as the best bat in the 2014 draft, and so far Schwarber has not disappointed, hitting .339/.437/.603 with 13 homers in 63 games (at three levels) since turning pro as the No. 4 overall pick.

9. Addison Russell, ss, Cubs

Team: Double-A Tennessee (Southern)

Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .281/.303/.688 (9-for-32), 9 R, 4 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBIs, 1 BB, 2 SO

The Scoop: Russell has stung the ball like never before after coming over to the Cubs from the Athletics in the Jeff Samardzija trade. He’s slugging .556 at Tennessee (with a career-best .261 isolated slugging percentage), and seven of his nine hits this week went for extra bases. Many scouts see plus power production for Russell down the line, which obviously will play at whichever infield post at which he settles in Chicago.
