According to Badler, the Brewers are trying to trade for space before signing Lara.

They're the only team of the four expected to go over their slot that seemed interested in a trade.

Wonder what the Cubs would want there - there's not much interesting in their farm system and I still have a tough time trying to value IFA space. I wonder if there's any way they can expand the trade to get the Brewers 2015 competitive balance pick.

I could see them being interested in Scheirholtz, Bonifacio (if he gets healthy), or Valbuena (obviously have to get proper value). In fact I could see them being really interested in Bonifacio if/when he gets healthy. Segura has been awful at SS, I doubt Scooter Gennett is going to keep OPSing over .800 at 2B and Braun/Ramirez have had nagging injuries most of the year in the OF and at 3B so his versatility could help them quite a bit.

I'm not sure I like anyone in the Brewers system enough that they'd crack the Cubs' top 10.

I'm not sure what to make of Jimmy Nelson. His numbers are amazing, especially for the PCL, but he's also already 25 which makes me wonder why the Brewers didn't bring him up long ago.

Agreed, but I'd do something like Bonifacio+IFA money for a comp balance pick. I think. Like Raisin said it's hard to judge the value of IFA money.

comp pick good. I always like this FO having more 1st - 2nd round picks. If we could net one of those with the meh guys we have left, I'll be happy.

Aww:

@BenBadler: Gilbert Lara money RT @susanslusser Athletics traded International Slot #57, worth $339,000, to Brewers for pitcher Rodolfo Fernandez.

Ben Badler said the Brewers are still looking for IFA cap space but those slots can't be worth much if all $339,000 got was a 24-year old middle reliever in A-ball.

@jjcoop36: Source: Rays pick up international slots from Marlins that add up to $1 million. Marlins pick up RHRP Matt Ramsey.

Won't it be kind if difficult to actually use our whole pool? At what point doesn't it make sense to overpay just to use your pool rather than roll over actual dollars to spend next year when you aren't capped.

No clue about the logistics of things:As in how many players do we even have room for between the two leagues? I'm not going to sign guys just to spend our budget, if there's not enough players we like in the 250k and under range, just save it for next year.

That said, my guess is we'll sign 15-20 players. Seems that's in the usual range anyway.

So on the high end, you're at 20 guys averaging 200k without any individual making more than 250k. Seems unlikely, but maybe they'll really try and exploit some package deals.

Edit - on the low end you'd be averaging about 266k for 15 guys which is obviously impossible.

My understanding was that we would sign 6 guys from the same agent who would give the top guy $1.25MM and split the rest amongst the scrubbs (like our 8th-10th round picks, for example). So I'm not sure there's any real need to dump cap space unless there aren't enough shady Latin American agents to pull this deal with (not likely). I can see trading the space for something valuable, but I don't think it's getting much value based on the Brewer's trades (not that I know [expletive] about the Brewer's farm, of course)

It's so hard to regulate though. If you find the right trainer, you can hide guys at our academy, to where no one really gets much of a look at them. It's such a crapshoot with kids this young as it is. A bad look and most guys are likely on to the next guy anyway.

They're definitely doing better, more showcases, more actual game looks. But it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out trainers doing stuff like this for a flat fee to themselves either.

I can't believe that this isn't already common practice, but maybe I'm wrong.

If you tried that Bud Selig would find a way to pwn the hell out of you.

I'm pretty sure all 30 teams do something like that now.

Yeah, but it's about restraint. If you make it too blatant and get someone really good, they'll come down on you.

The point is, there is such a variance on how teams value individual players, it's easy to do. There are guys that have gotten million dollar bonuses that other teams truly see as a 50k type.

@JeffPassan: Selig on an international draft: "I believe in it, and I hope during the next negotiations we get it done.”

So next year we should have another window to go way over allotment.

Exactly what I was thinking.

The only concern would be that the draft would come in during the penalty period for the Cubs. They could then be denied a first round pick in the draft because of the penalty.
